Default cam or no cam? and suggestions please.

I currently am in the early stages of building a LS1 to swap into my bird. I have a pretty much lock on a bone stock motor with about 80k miles(I will probably refresh it and go from there). I will also be getting an LS6 intake with stock but ported throttle bod and will be running Hooker LTs and ORY.

I was wondering what everyone thought would be a good streetable cam. I will be daily driving this car. It will be a M6 with stock 3.42 gears, but eventually a 12 bolt with 3.90s or 4.10s. I want something mildly agressive but nothing that surges and bucks at every light. I am looking for a good low end torque cam that makes power pretty consistently throughout the RPMs.

A buddy of mine has the F13 cam, which he makes very nice power throughout but he also has AFR heads, so I attribute a good amount of that power to it. I believe the specs are 230/232. He will also be tuning my car once it is complete, he is a great tuner.

Also some basic information on what supporting mods I should do would be greatly appreciated. I assume springs, maybe an LS6 timing chain and what not. Honestly I don't know much on cams and how to choose one and what is needed to make them perform and be safe at the same time.

BTW, just for the record, I have helped with 2 cam swaps on a friends SS (HOSS on here) and seeing that the motor will be out of the car anyways, I figured this would be way easier and less of a pain then doing it down the road.

Thank you all for the help. This is a pretty big decision at this part in the build.

id say TSP 228R is a really really good choice. just drop some 918 springs in and maybe have your heads milled a little and put some .040 gaskets in. great low end good luck with the build.

Mine is the F14 cam on a 114 LSA. I don't have any complaints and mine is a daily driver. I wish I could do away with the 3800 stall though. If I had to do it over again, I would have definately went with a bigger cam, but that's just me.

Your plan is one of the most common set-ups, so it is not like there is no info on the board on this.

224/224 111 108 will get you close

my advice is to not rebuild it. just do rod bolts. then put the motor in the car as is. change your cam later

why? why go back through the hastle, may only be a weekend project, of taking everything off and doing it then? why not just do it now while the motor hasn't even been put in the car yet? wouldn't that be the smart thing to do? just get it out of the way, because i know i eventually want to cam the car.

No TSP and since you know me I dont need to explain.

Thunder racing/Futral are good cam choices or a custom cam. If you want we can figure it out one day and go from there. I saw we set it up with a custom grind.

^ what he said. Don't forget upgraded pushrods. A good set of headers would be a good idea as well. I wouldn't worry so much about the ported TB, save your money on that and get yourself a good set of rod bolts. Although I don't think you'll be spinning it over 6500 RPMs. You'll want to get some tuning as well.

i had a 120k motor that i felt i needed to rebuild before i put it into my car. afterwards i wished so much that i wouldnt have messed with it because it didnt need it. take the rod caps off to check for damage when you do rod bolts and if you see damage rebuild it. but if it looks fine just leave it alone. i wish over and over that i would have. when you rebuild it you are more likely to mess something up, than for a stock motor with 100k on it to mess up, even with a cam. im just giving you advice that i wish someone would have told me.

also dont go with a wussie cam like a 224. get a man cam like a trex, MS3/4, G5x3/4.
