Default Auto Cam.. should only take a second..

Hey the seasons are a'changin... we all know what that means for the residents on the east coast.. lets get under our hoods lol... i already purchased a couple of performance parts that are sitting in my basement/garage waiting for the weather to change.. but im interested in getting a small cam upgrade.. My camaro SS is my daily driver so i need it to be reliable. I read in a different post that a good baby cam is a 216/220.. but with my research they said that it's not a great cam for an automatic.. something might have to be tuned out (something i would like to avoid).. Does anybody know off hand a decent small/baby cam that would be a direct replacement without tuning anything out.. perhaps something smaller or previous experiences... or will that one be fine without having to tune anything out.. thx.

Well, regardless of what cam you pick, you are going to want to get tuned. Hope you have a converter in the pile of mods in the basement, otherwise you are going to have a useless cam setup as far as power goes.

GMPP Hot Cam and springs. You will always benefit from tuning though, even on a dead stock car.

On a stock tune, stock converter A4, a Hot Cam is going to be horrible.

To get the most of any cam, a tune is needed. The more power you add, the more the tune is an issue. This is especially true with an A4, since the idle is more sensitive and shift points are fixed. Don't buy a cam until you can afford to pick up some tuning software (or have it done).

If you want to old school it, look for a used MAF translater and go with something mild like a 212/216 115 112

I misread, thought he already had a converter.

they do exist. the one ragtop suggested would work.
there are a few old comp grinds, like the 212/218 114 lsa, that would work as well. you can mod and keep the stock tc if that's what you want.

i have a 214/230 .601/.613 on a 112 lsa custom grind on stock converter. it was DRIVABLE without a tune but you would definitely want to get it tuned before you went crazy with it. i dd my car and love it, yes a stall would really help but personally, i hate automatics and im switchin to a 6spd so im not buyin a stall. i'd definitely recommend something along those lines if you didnt wanna do a converter. cheatr cam by thunder racing is the same duration with a 117 lsa and people have made pretty decent power with it.

That's funny, I'm just about ready to go in the opposite direction with my Trans Am. (manual to auto). Which displeases me as I dropped $1K on a Textralia.

I thinking of that or something pretty close for my car. The big difference is I have stock manifolds and cats. Why did you go with such a big split for your car? For the same overlap I'd think you'd make more power with less exhaust duration and more intake duration.

I have the 212/218 comp. cam in my vet . Idles like stock but iirc picked up 30+ hp on the dyno. This cam will be for sale in 3 weeks. Also have a maf translater now for sale.

its the same duration as the cheatr cam. when i had it made, i asked for a cam that would work well with stock manifolds because at the time...i didnt plan on doing headers.they said it will work well with stock manifolds but if i have headers it should be even better. soooo...i bought headers to make it even better lol it was also made to work good without a stall
