Thinking about an LT1

Thinking about an LT1
I found a '97 SS for sale around here, pretty good condition from what I can tell (only saw pics yet, didn't see it in person), and the owner has records of all the maintenance done to it. It has 167,000 miles on it, though, which is... well, a lot? Haha
What my plan for the car was, is to daily drive it for about a year or so, maybe a little longer, then buy a cheap import or something for a daily and then retire the car and make a project out of it. That way I wouldn't have to worry about gas mileage, things breaking, etc...
I was just wondering what you guys thought about that, since by the end of that year, year and a half it'll have anywhere from 180,000 miles to 185,000 miles.
Homeboy wants $6,000 for it.

Looks like it was taken care of from the pics. But be careful white can hide alot of inperfections especially in pics. also take it for a drive see how it is. What mods are done to the car?

Thats a little steep for the mileage. I would go no more then $5,500.
If he would take that or less you could put that extra money towards a cheap honda or something.
I would get a beater ASAP though just to be on the safe side.
Check the records and see if the fuel pump and opti-spark have been changed. If not they are a ticking time bomb lol. My Fuel pump went out after gears, catback. and a tune lol.

To an fbody consumer, more times then not, a 6 speed is the desired choice. But if you look them up on edmunds, or KBB, the Auto is worth a couple hundred more. ( or book value )
The 4L60-E is a nice, strong shifting transmission right out of the box so If you don't mind an Auto you wont be disappointed, but since its a 6 speed, makes no difference.
As for how much the car is worth, it depends on the interior condition, as well as the paint.
With 160,XXX miles, its definitely seen some road, but that doesnt mean it hasnt been taken care of.
See if the coolant is in good, clear condition.
Check the oil, listen close for any ticks in the motor, or noises in the chassis going down the road, and make sure it holds good oil pressure. (doesn't gotta be perfect, just average... wont make a difference performance wise... 45-60 cold, 18-24 warm [at idle] )
Those are the basics, besides looking underneath to check the wheel wells and unibody for rust and wear.
And never buy a car without going for a drive first.
You want to be able to feel the car shift through all the gears, and feel/hear the rearend for and signs of weakness.
Good luck with the car, its definitively a nice looking SS.
(besides the word camaro behind the door... thats gotta go)

Haha yeah, I don't dig the Camaro decal back there either. Or the one on the windsheild, but I'd probably keep the hockey sticks if I end up buying it. Speaking to the guy, sounds like I probably won't get it (he says he's got a few people who want to buy it, but that's also an old trick too.... lol)
Thanks for the tips

i'd offer him $5k I got my '96 with , Long tube headers, Offroad Ypipe,3.73 gears, 17" SS rims, 4" cowl, 6 speed, t-tops, never driven in winter, had 80K on it and i got it for $6,600. It was actually a straight trade for my '00 GTP with alot of miles but we both wanted the same for our cars and he wanted a good DD. Good trade i thought. he likes it. Just trying to give you an idea of what to pay for it. It looks like a beautiful car though. Looks clean. I'd say if it's in good shape and running order i'd go to $6k as top dollar. But try and get it for as cheap as possible Plus it's an SS take those Camaro decals and maybe the hockey sticks off and you got yourself a SEXY lookin' car. Make the deal...

i paid 5500 for my 94 z28 with 53k on it, good condition. i think that is too much. i would shop around for other Z,s. you may be able to find a better deal but if its what you are looking for and in good condition tell him 5 grand.
