Well there is a difference between a whine and a grind.

it was moderate for about 3 weeks(i always thought it was the brake disks because the rears are warped), then became loud for about 2 weeks.

Did you drive home on it after all that happend. If so it wasnt all that bad i have had bout drivers side and passenger side axles snap on me, at differnt times. And i still drove home on them one was from the drag strip and it was a good 35 miles or so. Doin 45 or so the whole way. But yeah i hear you on those gears whinnin. I had my 4.10s wine and then one day it got really bad and sounded like someone was using a grinder in the back of my truck turned out the pinion gear bolt had backed off cause i hadnt crushed the crush sleve the whole way. those gears looked nasty when i finnaly got it home.

A loud whine in a 10-bolt with original gears is cause for concern. My Moser 12-bolt is so loud that I wear earplugs whenever I drive on the highway but I don't expect it to fail anytime soon.

eh i have no one to blame but myself, i put off replacing the bearings, and i got fucked. but you live and learn. i was not able to drive it, had to tow(20 bucks to tow, i got a hookup) the blown bearing caused the main gear to become misaligned.
