The new deep tranny pan
Well I bought a deep tranny pan from FLT. I have owned the car since it had 51k on it and now it has 112k i have never changed the tranny fluid just made sure it didnt run low. well so far it seems to be holding up. Has any one else every done this and if so did your tranny blow? I have heard not to change the fluid after so many miles just wondering if anyone can leave some input.

i wouldnt change it. youve prolly got clutch material thats worn and now "stuck" in the fluid.
i grew up around my dad telling me never to change the fluid on a high milage tranny unless it started showing signs that it needed changing.
everybody gonna give you a different opinion.
good luck!

Hmmm, well I was always told by our local 4L60E builder that changing the fluid is the cheapest way to make a tranny last, as is a cooler. So I am going to disagree with you guys.

Well changed it and put the pan on monday and so far its not doing anything out of the ordinary. The old pan didnt look to bad. I mean im sure with ever trans fluid change youll always find some material in there. although I havent forgot to knock on wood.

on a high milage unit, material in the fluid is a good thing. not metal shavings. if its damaged its damaged, but on a worn set of clutches, dirty fluid helps it hold a gear and shift.
im a firm believer.
im not saying changing tranny fluid is bad, but i wouldnt change in certain cases.

I tried the "no-change is a good change" opinion on my land rover. then it started slipping at 119K. drained the fluid and it was GOOP. flushed 3 times and added SEA FOAM. bad idea. it seized the valve body reverse so only forward gears work. both ideas were poor advice.
I'll NEVER keep the same fluid in there. clutch material in the fluid going through a mico filter doesn't jive in the dex3 world. I usually stay on my tranny changes but I let the rover slide and now I'm paying for it. bad idea missing the service interval. The manual recommends changing it MORE frequently with heavy use. Some sources say it's best to change out tranny filters once a year or 12-15K miles. I'd gone 30K fluid, 50 filter and had never had a tranny problems with one before.
A bigger problem might be the 2/3 left in the convertor wet-sanding the clutches in worn trannys when you swap out only 1/3.
Oh yeah -- mobil1 is the way to go as well. synthetics save gears, bushings, and bearings. if it's not grabbing enough add some trick shift.

I would chang the fluid on a trans that only had 112k on it you should be fine. Leaving the old trans fluid in and it keeping the trans from slipping is a myth. Do a filter change and flush whenever. Look ontop of the filter when you pull it down, thats where the big particals are going to sit.. a little brass and clutch materal in the pan is normal. What you dont want to see is any steel.
