Default AN fitting sizes

How do you tell the size of a AN fitting (ie -6, -8 etc.).

Check out the ID. -AN sizes are in 1/16th's of an inch. -8AN = 1/2" -6AN = 3/8" etc.

I believe the AN sizes were invented by the military ("give me an 8"), read that somewhere.

Probably ASME (american society of mechanical engineers) or some pipefitters union. Stands for national pipe threads BTW.
