If it is lifters for sure, you'll need to yank off the heads:
Parts needed:
Lifters
gaskets
head bolts
fluids
Labor depends on where you take it, but it is an average 6 hour job.
IMO, take the car somewhere where they can diagnose the noise first. Then make your decision.

you have to remove the heads to replace the lifters. it is a HUGE deal. its going to cost you well over $1000.
good news is that its probably not actualy a big deal and you could drive the **** out of the car for years and thousands of miles and it be fine.

... except if it's a rod bearing instead of a lifter. People selling used cars have been known to lie, on occasion. I echo the advice to take it to a GM dealer and have it examined by a certified technician. That's probably the best $100 you'll spend on that vehicle.

Take it to a dealer and get another opinion. Swapping them out isn't that bad and there is no sense trashing a good motor by thinking it'll last for thousands more miles.
