Once you super-build a TH400 and add a GV OD unit, you are in the ballpark of a topend 4L80E build including the electronics. Plus the advantage of the programmability - my 80E is very mellow around town until it hits the 50% TPS mark, then it completely changes personality into neck-snapping shifts.
It does weigh about 75lbs more than the 60E, and even more with a deep pan, but it will get the job done into the 4-digit HP area. Hughes built mine for 1000HP.

what did they charge for one built to handle that??

Total was $4300 plus a core charge of $800. At that time I could not find a good core but now they are about $300-400 locally so I would have saved a few hundred after shipping.
That included:
Built tranny
Converter
TCI T-Com computer and harness
Mech. speedo drive
Shipping to NorCal
Buy it from a Hughes Dealer and the price is better than what Hughes will quote you directly. I got mine through Sallee Chevrolet (now Gilbert Chev)
When I bought it there were only a couple sources for high HP 80E's. Now there are more but many I don't know their quality & reliability.

1200 hp will push you to somewhere around 160 mph in the quarter. Depending on engine max rpm, tire height, and converter slip, your rear gears will end up pretty tall. I question the need for OD.
For example, I'm running 146 mph in the quarter. With a 26" tire, my rpm in the trap is 6400 (peak hp is 5700). I'm geared about right, or slightly short. I'm running 3.00/1 in the rear, which is very livable on the street. If I were pulling 160 in the quarter, I'd need a 2.73, which is even better.

Actually a good point with that much power and torque you could run 273s or if available even 256 gears and have that same highway rpm as lower gears with the overdrive and though back in the early 80s when they used those gears with 305 engines it sucked but with 1200 plus HP you should still be a monster across the board

Being able to put it in OD and having the converter lockup. Makes for a nice highway drive.
BTW, I don't use OD at the track. But I do lock the converter.

TH400 won't shift to reverse
Worked fine when parked for winter...fluid level seems ok. Forward gears work fine... now it will not move at all in reverse...tranny does have some runs on it but not a lot...it is a b&m rebuild. Any thoughts appreciated. Chuck
