Default My 45 dollar FRC's!

Ok so heres the story:

Ive had my z28 since november, and ive been adding little things here and there to spice up the engine bay. It needed something that would really help it stand out and I thought FRC's were great but I didnt want to drop $200 plus on a nice painted set. I came across this set on ebay and figured I could at least take a shot at cutting them up:

bought from Ebay = $35.60

I first tried to get a template from a member here but was turned down since it was suspected i might just be trying to resell them instead of using them for their intended purpose. So no templates, I was on my own. Lets just say the first tome through didnt go so well.

In my opinion i cut off way too much.

After considering my options i decided to try to repair them with this stuff called "QuickPlastik" i found at Home depot (<-are they a sponsor?? ) that i was going to use to fill the letters.

QuickPlastic (2 packs) about $5.00

I figured it was worth a try and despite not having much experience with this kind of work it turned out pretty well.

Here they are in progress. You can see both where I repaired and rebuilt part of the cover.

Primered:

I had everything I needed to spray the covers except the actual silver color. I picked up a can of Duplicolor DSGM340 from autozone.

Paint < $5.00

The 5 ounce can was enough to coat each cover nicely.
I allready had the clearcoat and polish. They could still use a bit more buffing.

That pic doesnt show the back of the passanger side cover too well but I was able to rebuild it quite nicely and it covers much more than in the original picture. I'm very happy with the final product given the price.

new pictures:

You can pm the member for where he got them - there was a long discussion about ebay items and this is one that competes with our Sponsors.

that was just some guy who was selling the covers off his vette. the link was to the auction that i won. The guy doesnt sell the covers anymore, in fact he has no items on ebay at the time at all... so i dont think theres too much competition going on there. sorry, but dont be asking me where to find 35 dollar covers unless you want a link to a closed auction.

yes it sandedly extremely well. i thought maybe i was going to need some bondo/dynalite over it, but it worked great without it, and i sprayed the primer right over it.
