Default Buddies 98z vs 04 Cobra (are LS1's underrated)

Last time my buddy went to the track he only had a SLP lid/SLP exhuast on his 98z28 w/128K miles (M6) on some crappy street tires. Another friend of mine had a 04 cobra w/ i think just a K&N setup. My buddy ran a 12.89@110 in his z28 and my friend in the cobra ran a 12.9@111 (My buddy in the Z28 is a badass driver)....anyways all of us were expecting more from the cobra!!! They come outta the factory with 390hp and the 98ls1 comes with 305hp. I thought the extra hp would make the cobra pull better et's. I mean, from what ive read, compared to the 98ls1, they have double the valves, quadruple the cams, and to top it off.... i freakin supercharger!!!! and theyre still in the range of a 98 M6 ls1??... Maybe those cobras come all choked up from factory and really need an exhuast or maybe they weigh more? Most say those cobras need a really badass driver and say most 03-04 cobra owners cant drive ... i dunno!!!

ls1 f-bodies are underrated that's a fact, but that guy in the cobra is not as good a driver as your buddy is. If your friend was driving that cobra it would have run a quicker time. If you can't drive well, doesn't matter if you have a car that should run 12s it will go see a slower e.t.

that cobra should be trapping higher though an m6 ls1 fbody with a lid and catback will hang with a stock 03-04 cobra.

my friend has an '04 Cobra, the factory tune is horrible on those cars, he got his dyno tuned as is bone stock and pulled 38 more horses, on the stock set-up, ford and SVT choke those babies

03-04 Cobras are indeed not as great as you might think in 100% form, but slap a catback on and tune it and ~400+whp is there and ready to be reckoned with.

Yeah, although on the street it is HARD as hell to find a 03/04 Cobra or Lightning on stock boost. Just as it is with turbo cars. This is where most people get the misconseption that they are overly fast cars.. They are still pretty badass though, I've been driving my buddys 03 10th anniversary around for the last few days

Those Cobra's aren't exactly easy to launch on street tires...

You're missing the other part of the story...

Low compression (8.5:1)
Horrible tune from the factor (10:1 A/F at 5,000+rpm & no timing)
3,650lbs for coupes
Low boost (8psi) through a bullshit Eaton supercharger

Fix all those problems and it's at 500+rwhp and it moves pretty well.

No stock LS1 fbody has ever gone mid 12's @ 112-113mph, which
is what a stock Cobra should run...with a decent driver. A '98 M6 SS
isn't nearly as quick in stock trim. It's driver error that closes the gap.

BS. It is all that damn money you make weighing you down that closes the gap UNIT

1 day I hope to crack 6 figures a year. Damnit, picking at rich people makes you feel better while you are working on being a rich person! College sucks

All '98 LS1s made 345hp from the factory, no matter what car they were put in.

The guy your buddy raced isn't the best driver, but high 12's is what I see alot of stock 03/04's run. On stock tires and the IRS, they are bitch to launch, and most of us average drivers cant get them to their full potential. And your arugument of twice the valves/4x cams doesn't mean crap considering the LS1 has more cubes.

Your circumstance isn't that unusual. That's a good time to run for the z with those mods, and that time for the cobra is a little on the high side of what an average run can be for them. I've had the pleasure of launching a cobra, and all I can say is if I were to own one a solid axle swap is probably the first thing I'd do.

On a side note, I'd be curious to see what times a stock motor, solid axle cobra would run.
