Default What is this orange & purple crap in my engine?

Somehow the 2,3,4 main bearings are burned up in my brand new 355 and made a bad knock and a ton of copper shavings in the oil. The 1,5 were fine. The crank was ground 10/10 and te RA was balanced. Bearing clearance is .002" and torqued correctly.

I am searching for the cause of this.

WTF is this purple and orange stuff I found in the oil pump screen?

There are two small chunks of the Fel-pro oil pan gasket, not sure how they got torn off. There is also some very thin purple and orange plastic like fragments that I have no idea what they are. They both appear to be similar material, hard and brittle like a paint coating of some kind. It appears "rolled" and easily breaks into pieces and it is definitley not RTV.

There was a generous amount of this crap in the screen. Someone please tell me what this might be.

Did you build the Engine, or did you get it assembled?

I built it myself, of course the machine work was done in a macine shop by a good machinist. I am confident that my assembly skills are more than adequate and I dont remember ever seing anything purple or orange that could have gone in.

I never used gloves during assembly. Very wierd.

I figured it out, there were paint markings on the new cam and guess what color they were? Orange and purple.

The paint is obviously used for ID purposes an next time I will take the time to remove it prior to install.

The engine builder thinks the mains may have been too tight. He is going to take the entire thing and redo the shortblock.

I built the entire motor. I did not do the machine work. It appears that the mains were a tad tight by looking at the damage but they still fall within GM spec.

I am now giving the entire shortblock to the machinist to have it cleaned, re-bearinged and assembled. I now dont have the time to do it.
