Default Why are headers bad with STS?

I am consindering purchasing the STS kit in the future. In all the threads that I read, people are saying to get rid of headers and put the stock manifolds back on. Even though there is a turbo, wouldnt headers still help with with lower end power? If heat loss is the problem why dont people just wrap it?

type in "STS" and "longtubes"

stock manifolds (ported and wrapped) work best for spool. LTs dissipate heat.

Heat builds boost... Headers release the heat compared to the stock manifolds...

But dont headers increase exhaust velocity? And cant you just wrap the headers?

you would think so but really if think of your manifolds like a small water nozzel the faster the water is going to come out, and headers as a larger nozzel more volume flowed out but with no force.

Exactly!!! Also some headers are proned to leaking...You need your exhaust as tight as possible and a leak will hender what you're actually trying to accomplish... Headers are also supposed to create a scavenging effect on the engine... In essense pulling the wasted gas and oxygen out... What's the point if it's being forced out??? If it were a sc'd car then the thinking would be totally different but that's why with a rearmount setup it's easier, more cost friendly, and more power rewarding to just stay stock in this case... To each their own and if you really want to then do so but you'll have to contend with the losing of the heat... My friend has had to contend with it and it actually felt like it didn't pull nearly as hard... it works on different principles...

Good way to think of it.

Also, headers help to free up restriction in the exhaust and promote flow when NA, but that point is not longer the restriction when your are forcing all the exhaust though a quarter sized hole in the turbo. The heat you loose is far more valuable.

The nozzle description tied it all together. Thanks

I have talked to Billy from Texas Rear Turbo's and he told me just wrap the exhaust and there shouldnt be an issue. You can retain your headers and have the STS kit....
This is what Billy told me:
The kit will work fine with headers. Are yours coated. If not, it hurts spool a little because of the heat it looses.
This is also what he sent me in treturn to asking about there Cam and turbo kit:
'99 Z-28, 6 speed, stock heads, LT headers uncoated, STS with t-67, our fmic, our cam with Patriot springs, and our tune. We also wrapped his exhaust and made a couple of changes to the charge pipe. Before the cam, he put down 476 at 7.5psi. After our cam, he put down 503rwhp at 6psi. The way I look at it, I would rather run lower boost and be easier on the motor.
I hope this helps ya out some. Coated headers are bette rthan non coated, they hold the heat and push it away from the engine bay. So I would think wrap them from the collector on back and you should be just fine. That is what I am planning on doing.....

I know on my build the headers hurt me big time. Leaks are an issue, along with heat dispersion, and much more volume than a manifold. Headers will work, but they were really designed for restricted NA setups.

With my long tubes it caused the turbo to not spool until about 4000-4500 because of the lose of exhaust velocity as stated above. I put a set of of ported/jet hot coated 02 manifolds on & it spooled at 2500-3000. I actually felt that the car pulled a little harder w/ the manifolds. I wish I would have dyno'd it w/ longtubes and then w/ manifolds, but oh well.

Also if you go with longtubes remember to NOT wrap them if they are ceramic coated because the wrap will dry rott if you do... I guess what everyone is trying to say is "DON'T GO TO HEADERS JUST YET".... Seriously see what those manifolds will do first and then go the headers route... If you want you may be able to port match them but I would honestly stick with stock manifolds and put the money in the tune or other detrimental areas....

Waaay too many people are getting consistent results with stock manifolds to even consider longtubes. Port the stock manifolds, and then wrap the exhaust all the way back to the turbo. You can also consider that HVAC wrap stuff under the header wrap. and your done.

Thanks for the comments about the nozzle description. I am going to take my headers off tomorrow and put my manifolds back on, I lost my y-pipe, should I find another stock one or use a different kind?

I went w/ the SLP stock replacement y-pipe. It works pretty well for me. Your making a good move going to manifolds. You won't be disappointed.

Make sure the Superchips goes in the trash when the headers do.
