Default 427 oil burning update

Last week I posted that I had burnt 1.5 qts in 300 miles. So I topped it off and put about 134 miles on it since and I was about .5 qts low this time, which is 1/3 better than last week. So I have changed the oil again since it seemed to be kinda darkish for only couple hundred miles on it. I will see if it continues to get better with the new oil in it. Just wanted to keep everyone posted on what has been going on.

I only have a few miles on mine and my oil was fairly black too, so I changed mine also.Hopefully it will get cleaner as the time goes by?Traver

Your first oil change on these are going to be dirty. The reason behind it is all the lube on these motors used prior to startup. Ive installed about 7 to 10 lsx's and they all seem to clean up around the 2nd to 3rd oil change. Oil consumption will be a factor untill the rings seat. I feel that the rings should get a good seat within 4 to 5 heat cycles. You are burning 1.5 quarts in 300 miles? To me it seems like alot but it just might need a little more time for the rings to seat.

Are you sure your not sucking it in the intake? I thought mine was burning oil too until I looked in my catch can...................Paul

That's about how much mine burned. Maybe even more, I was worried I would have to have the bottom end rebuilt. It took about 3000 miles before consumption started going down. Then I got the bright idea (finally) to put on a catch can. It would fill up quick, but the motor burned hardly any oil. Another 500 miles and the can gets very little, no more than a stock engine. Some of these engines just need alot of break in miles I guess.

I will put the catch can back on and see if it continues to get better. Right now I only have the 2 breathers and a vacuum line from the intake to the valley cover, nothing else.

I have a PCV valve that has a very small fix hole in it that I got from SDPC for my 403. I run a catch can in that line. I run a breather off the passenger side valve cover. I don't burn any oil at all.
