Question Removing MLS Gasket Layers

Did anyone try raising compression by removing layers of the stock LS1 MLS head gasket?

I've read about Victor Reinz® Victo-Stack® head gasket kit, which features an advanced, modular, multi-layer steel (MLS) design offering the advantage of being able to easily raise an engine’s static compression ratio by lowering the cylinder height or, conversely, to lower the compression ratio by raising the cylinder height. Not sure if it's available for LS1 engines.

I wouldnt even try that on a regular MLS gasket.

Why is that?

LS1 MLS gasket has three layers.

What is the harm if one removes the two outer layers and leavesthe inner one?

It has 3 layers for a reason, to ensure a proper seal.

Then, is it better to use graphite gasket instead of removing MLS layers. I know the best is to use Cometic gasket, just asking about graphite use, how good.

I wouldnt use graphite if i was replacing a gasket on these engine. Just get the gasket that offers the compression and quench that you desire in the first place.

wow. no reason to do that. just mill the heads.

Smaller head gaskets will tighten the quench area, milling heads does not do that. Milling and changing head gaskets do 2 different things.

As he said, milling the heads for more compression and using thinner gasket for tighter quench (better combustion and less chance of detonation).

brad8266,

Great responses.

I wouldn't do it, and also it woulds raise your compression, NOT lower it.

Thanks, I meant for raising compression ratio (edited).
