HELP! Horrible clanking noise when I try to start
I am helping my friend with a '96 Tahoe 5.7 vortec. I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator. Now it won't start. When I try to start it, it makes a single horrible clanking sound and then will not turn over again. The belts rotate about a quarter turn with the clanking sound. I can smell a little bit of fuel so there is probably a fuel leak. Would a fuel leak cause this loud clank? I do not think that it is a backfire. I may have run down my battery by trying to start it.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as he is stranded without a vehicle now. Thanks.

I heard those years with the vortech engine tend to have a leak on the intake and fuel pressure regulator. That clanking sound could be the engine being off timing, a valve lifter getting stuck.

If you had a bad fuel pressure regulator, it may have flooded the engine enough to cause it to hydraulic lock. Take out the plugs and see if it will will turn over. MAKE SURE TO KEEP ANY SOURCE OF SPARK OUT OF THE ENGINE CONPARTMENT. Unplug the coil so it can't fire. My 2 cents - hope it helps

a few weeks back, my intake gasket blew on my 97 s10 with the 4.3 vortec. i heard it was a garunteed thing for thos years, but i dont know about the 5.7. the way i knew was that it was spitten water out of the front of the engine. i dont know if this is related to your problem but just a thought.
