10w30 or 10w40 for High rpm's?
Right now I am running 5w30 in my car full bolt ons,cam and katech oil pump. My car see's 6600-6800 quite a bit. Which oil would offer better protection 10w30 or 10w40? Syntehtic or Dino Oil reccomended if changed every 3k? I know this is asked alot and I have had my car 3 years and awlays used 5w30-10w30 and now recently I have become more conerned with it. My car has 40K and always see's high rpms. I live in ky where we get mild winters 20-30 degree cold temps and 80-100 degree temps in the summer. Thanks for any input.

A good synthetic 10w30 should provide you with enough protection but I would really like you to do me a favor. I've yet to see a high rpm LS1 do an oil analysis, so try out one of the viscosities for a few thousand miles, then take a sample, then try the other. Compare the wear metals, and then you'll have your answer 100% for sure. Otherwise we're just speculating.

I'm up for it! I'm running M1 5-30 because of dyno day last weekednd. I'll switch over to 0-40 and do an analysis on both. I have a H/C engine with 51,000. Please send me the info on obtaining the sample kits and where to send them.

Here is who I use for oil analysis:

Terry knows his stuff and he's been working with a lot of LS1 guys lately trying to help figure out the solution to the oil consumption and piston slap problems.

I forgot about your report Steve (just turned 33 today, perhaps old age is setting in early!) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> , was your car running 10w30 or 10w40? Do you have results with both viscosities to compare?

Patman, how much of a sample do you send and what kind of container do you use?
I am about to change my 10w30 Redline fluid after several trips to the track and want to see how it holds up.

I believe the container holds about 100-150ml worth of oil. When you drain the oil you wait about 10-15 seconds first, then take the sample (you don't want the first stuff that comes out as it's not a true representation of the fluid)
