Default WHo here is running a 12 bolt, m6?

Im going to buy my 9" today, but Im really thinking..

The pros of a 9"

the 9" has a stronger ring gear.
easier to interchange the ring and pinion gear.

The pros of a 12 bolt:

The 12 bolt is cheaper and with c clip eliminators will have almost as strong axles as the 9"
The 12 bolt is lighter and requires less power turning the gears vs a 9 bolt. (Keeping the car as light as possible is important to me)
I would like to keep it all GM with the 12 bolt.
I can keep my ABS with the 12 bolt.

And either the 9" or 12 bolt, Im going woth 3.73s. I dont want to lose any top end and gas mileage for my daily driver.

Well posting things like that and expecting answers in a few hours won't help you at all.

i have a moser 12 bolt and a t56.

i thought about getting a 9 inch, but how often are you going to be changing ring and pinion gears and as for strength there are guys running 1.4 60 ft and putting 900 rwhp through a 12 bolt. its also easier to inspect gears because you dont have to pull the axles. i have a few more reason but im too tired and too drunk to think of them

i also have 3.73's. still getting 31 mpg highway

The only other thing I read that drew me kind of farther from the 12 bolt is gear whine if I make a few clutch dumps, because of the torque arm.

But still Im leaning towards a 12 bolt.

I have a Moser 12 bolt and an M6. It was dead quiet until I took it to the track. Now the whining is real loud. I'd go 9 inch, they are about all I sell these days, sometimes three to four a day!

I tried racing my 12 bolt and it got loud every time I took it to the track. 9 ring and
pinions later it's quiet but now I'm afraid to race it.Get a 9" with a m6 and don't worry about the weight. Also 410 or deeper gear mine is 2000 rpm at 70mph with a 430 gear
and 26" tires.

I have a co-worker with a 12bolt. He started with 4.10, then went to 4.30.

I car pool with him every now and then and ride to the track with him. He has done plenty 5k-6k clutch dumps at the track with Nitto 555r's, haven't had any whine yet. After I seen this tread I asked to make sure and he still says no.

Does brand of gear matter as far as whine? He uses Strange gears and says they're pretty thick.

It is. Also I have launched on my stock 10 bolt with Nitto 555Rs as high as 3700-3800 RPMS and hooked, I never got gear whine. I did this as much as 20-25 times and never had a problem...

So based on that, with slicks doing 4500 RPM clutch dumps on the 12 bolt shouldnt do much either.

If its the placement of the torque arm causing the distortion of the housing, then why dont we just change the location? isnt there anyhting like that available?

probably because Nitto 555rs dont hook like slicks would hook.

i have a moser 12 bolt with 4:10 gears and is quiet after 10,000 miles after numerous dumps at 4000+ rpms and on nitto DR's with original driveshaft that should have broke along time ago.

Okay, anyone with slicks or M/ts that have done clutch dumps?

because I know the nittos wouldnt harm it, Im only worried about the slicks doing some damage.

This is what I sent a couple/few days ago:

I am ready to order the 9" today or tomorrow.

But before I do...I was wondering, why not a 12 bolt trutrac? I know the 9" is a beefier rearend, but With a 12 bolt, and if I get c clip eliminators, wont that make a rather stout rear end as well? Also another reason Im leaning towards the 12 bolt is because it requires less power to turn, It is lighter ( which I am trying to save weight and lastly it costs less) All plusses in my book.

Thanks...

Just a heads up whether I get a 12 bolt or 9" Im looking for a 3.73...

Well I got my 12 bolt from Bob at EPP when I lived there. I also got the Spohn TA that relocates where it hooks up, and longer studs as the stockers will only have a couple of threads to hook up correctly.

I have been dumping my clutch arounf 5500-6000 of MT DR's and it is still holding up, and doesn't whine very bad at all. I took it kinda easy on the rear till I actually got a good clutch in, maybe that has something to do with it lasting and not whining. It is now going on 2-3 years and like it.
