Default Anyone put in a Transcooler?? Just got mine..

i just got my transcooler for my 99 T/A and am itching to put it in. where on the pan did you guys drill the hole for the npt fidings and did you have to also tap/thread those holes for the fittings? also where did you put your transcooler i was thinking of putting it right in front of the radiator. and help is greatly appreciated as ive never dropped the pan on my tranny before and im hoping this will make my newly rebuilt (blew up 2days before Dec. 06) tranny last longer

Not sure what kind of tranny cooler you got but you better read this article first. You dont have to touch the pan at all when installing a trans cooler. No drilling, tapping etc. Actually a pretty easy install if you are somewhat mechanically inclined at all.

Most recommend bypassing the radiator completely when doing this install. I will be making this change soon to my cooler.

the install you showd above recommended leaving the radiator and simply adding this into the system since the radiator does already help with cooling, and there would be no point in taking it out.

seems to make sense. if the radiator does some cooling already, why remove it and let the cooler do all the work. wouldnt 2 be better than 1.....

The only thing is if you didn't use the factory tranny cooler the engine temp might drop because of there not being any hot tranny fluid next to the engine coolent. Just a thought.

The theory is this:
The "cooler" in the radiator is really just a tank, and uses water temp to bring the trans temp down. The cooler you just purchased is a true radiator and will make a big change. If you still use the stock cooler, you run the risk of only going down to water temp, since it is still in the loop. It may also allow your water temps to go down a few degrees, not so sure on that one.
In my case, the trans temps are still higher than I like (they are running at water temp) so I will make the change.

So you need to completley bypass the cooler in the radiator?

Why not plumb the cooler in front of the radiator cooler, which will cool the tranny fluid before hitting the radiator, and help HEAT the fluid quicker oncold days insteadof completely bypassing the radiator cooler?

I bypassed my stock cooler, the reason is that it is the reason my first trans died. now have stage 2 performabuilt and a 3500 stall and it has been just fine in this florida heat with the b&m cooler.

snake how you like the perfomabuilt? if the weather here in NY shapes up i plan on puttin it in asap...

greg im not sure what cooler you bought but my B&M one has the inlet/outlet ports on the top of the cooler. is yours similiar? if so did you put the cooler in with those hose connections pointing up like normal or did you flip the cooler over so they face down. im not sure if i should just put mine in normal and use more hose to connect it all or flip it over and just run it out the bottom near the radiator bottom
