I'm new to the board. Just wondering if anyone has a 346 motor making 400rwhp(or more of course...) AND passes California smog checks.

its gona be hard to make that amount of power in cali without going to FI. Since you want to go the NA route your gona need headers but you gona have a hard time passing with long tubes, then your gone need a cam, and most are too big to pass smog. Long story short is your gona have a rough *** time doing it without any type of power adder

you could probably make just about 400RWHP with a 224/224 .565/.565 114 LSA and a good set of stage 2 heads along with all the bolt ons. Throw in that lunati 382 kit and mill the heads and you may have a good solid 420-450 RWHP

that would probably cost a bit more than FI. or you could do the 382 kit with somewhere around 9:1 comp. 224 cam stage 2 heads and like 15 pounds of boost <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

MMS has a ton of cars putting out over 400+ in CA, the tricky part is the headers. If you really need it 100% smog legal you should stay with stock manifolds and do a mild heads/cam combo. You'll wind up with around 385rwhp in an M6. Another option is the MAC "mostly smog legal" mid length headers+cats, which would get you closer to 400rw. Longtubes are 420+rw. I put down 446 with longtubes, no cats, and MMS parts. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I gotta think it's doable. I'm in Ohio, but my setup or something close to it would probably pass. I'm probably making 385 or so rwhp now (after pulley) with a fairly mild cam. There may be another 5-10 rwhp with a 224 cam, maybe a bit more with 1 3/4" primary shorties, like the BBK's or a custom fab. I like my power range for the street; these mods would move it up a bit.
If 400 rwhp is your goal, though, I think you could get there on an M6. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

For the cam, you are missing the obvious.....

Swap the stock cam in for the emmission test. After the test swap the good one back.

guys--great posts, i am encouraged on the 400rw target and the apparent ability to smog a 224/224 cam. can someone give me a rundown on any/all of the aftermarket headers that have CARB E.O. #'s?

Only shortie headers have CARB numbers <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> If you have a 2001+ car, they aren't even worth it. If you have a 98-00 you may pick around 5-10rwhp with heads and cam. With shorty headers it will be A LOT harder to hit 400 rwhp mark, just letting you know. JBA and Hooker both make shorty headers.

It is definitely possible, although I want to clarify if you are going with long tube headers. Technically they will fail visual inspection in CA, but they will pass the sniffer with cats. If you go the long tube/w cat route you should be able to be around 410-420rwhp with a good set of stage 2 heads and a 224/224 cam and still be smog legal, numbers would be a little lower through an auto. There is a local guy on ls1.com western, he made 380 rwhp with a Thunder racing 220/220 thru long tubes with cats, with stage 2 heads he'll be at 400+rwhp easy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Give Andy's Auto Peformance a call, they are in Monrovia and do great work at great prices, (626)447-3707, ask for Mark.

BBK is coming out with a new 1 3/4" primary shorty, available next month. It's been in the Jegs catalog since spring but not actually available. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />
The larger primary size (vs. 1 5/8" on Hookers and JBA's) should be worth a few horses. I may give them a try on my car. 1 3/4" Mac midlengths make almost the same top end horses as 1 3/4" longtubes, so these may work pretty well. You're not supposed to relocate the cats. LTs push the cats further back from the motor, making them less efficient.

I suppose you could always trade in your F-body for a Z06....

...Not really sure if the advertized 405 HP is RWHP but GM has consistently underestimated power with these engines so it should be failry close...

Speed Inc just took a set of our Stage 1.5 heads and made 400 RWHP through the cats, but it did have long tubes. The 222-224 cams will pass CA emissions, we have people with 230/230 cams that pass CA emissions once the cats light off. Hope this helps.

I have a couple of friends with Z06's. Awesome cars, but they aren't putting down 405 to the wheels without some mods. Best I can recall, they'll do about 365-370 RWHP...
