No, it's not necessary.
I almost didn't do an oil pump.

The above thread changed my mind.
However, the new Katech oil pump gave me piece of mind and works great so far.
I would do at least a new timing chain and ideally a new timing set. Rollmaster has an excellent product. I have the 2x Rollmaster and it was well worth it.

I didn't change my oil pump. It made good pressure before, and after H/C. Went with the Katech timing chain. The Rollmaster is a stout piece, but if you have an ASP pulley, you may need to machine it for clearance with a double roller chain.

If you have an 01+ car, then no you do not need an oil pump. However if you have a pre 01, definately replace it with an LS6(01) unit. You don't have to go with anything fancy, the LS6 pump is perfectly fine. It's a 60 dollar piece of mind that could save you from buying another motor...

I have an 01 w/heads/cam...
My oil pressure at idle is 40 or above sometimes...
When I stomp on it, it will go to 60, drop for a second, then jump back up real quick, and idea of what that is?

There is no need to do one if you are not having problems with it but there is no reason not to do it since you are going to be in there anyway. I changed my out for an ARE ported one when I did my cam swap for the peace of mind and for the simple fact I was in there and my luck as soon as I got everything back together it would have went out. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />

I went with a ported ARE LS1 pump. Glad I did, my stock piece wasn't making very good pressure even though I had almost no miles on the car. I think it would have failed eventually. The ARE pump has been excellent, oil pressure is great.
I saw no need to replace my chain. I had only 5,000 miles on the stock chain at the time.

I am not saying that you should not even consider a pump if you have an 01 car. If the pump has higher mileage, or a problem then of course go ahead and replace while it's apart. However the # of 01+ pumps failing is very miniscule, compared to the # of 98-00 pump failures.
