Default Richmond or motives?

Was going to buy motive 4:10's this week from TSP for 180.00 and the install kit for another 60.00 but saw someone has as set of richmond 4:10's in the sale forum w/ install kit for 270.00 shipped.

How do they compare to each other?

Richmond's are loud as F*** (whine) and you have to set them up a little looser than others. Looking back, I should have gone with 4:10s from GM.

AAM is the best quality and strength, see sponsor sale section for prices.

richmonds are noisy becouse thier teeth are cut on a harder angle, but thier strength is far superior to any other gear, but they do get noisy......but i didnt think richmond was thinking everyone is going to be complaining about rear end whine like a bunch of pansy asses on drag strip/ street cars, if they did they could have engineered gears to be quiter................but i think the majority of us are running 10 bolts, and with over 300hp stock plus mods i think the 10 bolt needs all the strength it can get...

AAM's are the best. Motive second.

All this talk about richmonds being noisy isnt always true, plenty of them out there are quiet. A lot of that came from ther pro-gears and in the past they may have had some problems. They are more likely to make noise, but the majority of them are quiet. They also are not noticeably stronger either. There are tons of opinions of harder material and different gear cut angles, but the only gears that are significantly different are the AAMs with the 3 cut. Rockwell hardness on Richmonds and Motives will come out almost identical, and the way they are cut is also almost identical.
The plain truth is no gear that is say a 4.10 or under should wine. You start getting into 4.56's and such and it has to be expected becuase the pinion RPM is getting higher. I have set up plenty of gears in many different applications and unless it is a 4.56/5.13 in a 4x4 I do not expect any noise, and even in those applications you hear the tires more.

Richmond are stronger than motive, but people say they are louder. I couldn't tell you personally so you gotta pick what you want. Strong gears or quiet gears.

Uhm... that's... not correct. They are noisy because of their material hardness, not because of specific tooth pressure angle. Richmonds 8620 gear sets have consistently Rockwelled at 62... all other manufacturer's 8620 gear sets Rockwell 58 (9310 is even softer) and this changes the materials natural/resonant frequency.

Nor does it have anything to do specifically with the GM 10bolt design.

Alot of the noise issues stem from set up issues. I have set up Richmonds dead quiet. I have also had a fair share of screamers... its really a gamble when using Richmond.
