Lightbulb Hey guys, time for a change (I think)

Here is the deal, short and sweet....
I was one of those guys who got stuck on PEAK numbers, and not so much on functionality, for the street at least....
Do not get me wrong, I love the car, especially at 6800-7000 RPMS....but everything else is a little rough...(still needs a bit more tuning, but I may hold off and change it first)

I am also not making the torque I want, not even close...but I am making more power than I was shooting for...SO, I feel that I would like to change my combo to something a bit more tame, easier to tune, and that will make a nice power band that is USABLE, and not just top end!

I have an MS3 and PRC stage 2.5 heads. I think the MS3 is just a bit too much for what I AM LOOKING FOR!

At this point, I think i wanna build something that makes around 415-430 RWTQ....and say 430-450 RWHP.....

Where do I start? Lets say that $ is not really a problem, and is avaliable...oh yeah I have the 90/90 and all already...full bolt ons etcetcetc

HELP!
(PS, what I had in mind- say like a 230/232 cam, and some milled AFR 205 59cc with some thinner cometics and a nice flycut) How would that combo work as far as SCR and DCR go, and driveability, etc?

Great setup there.

What you want is a mid size cam, high compression with a tight quench area. That will give you lots of TQ and the quench will help out a lot in preventing detonation with high compression.

I run a 232/236 112lsa with 57cc heads(TEA stage 3's) with a .040 head gasket, -2cc relief in the pistons. I still have a few more boltons I could do too. Numbers in sig. It drives around really well on the street.

Thanks Brad...so you think that my new combo sounds pretty good? WHat do you think the CR would be with the mill, cometics and say a 2cc flycut? I have 93 avaliable here in FL.
Your numbers are EXACTLY what I am looking for BTW...
Is it torquy as ****...like push you back in the seat ballsy?

Its torquey i have no problems shifting at 1500 in all gears. It pulls good whithout having to downshift in order to get power, its always there.

The combo you mentioned is the track you want to go down, high compression, tight quench, and a small/mid size cam is what you want. play around with a valve event calculator to see exactly what you can spec out. My setup is about 11.9 CR. Runs fine on 93.

I may need some help with the valve event calculator....I REALLY suck when it comes to specing out set ups...I am just a noob at it...the technical numbers part at least...thanks man

what if i kept the 5.3 heads from PRC, mill the heads...run a thniner gasket...flycut..and run a mid sized cam?? I may not have to sped the coin in AFR's then but may pick up torque and drivebility...

id stick with your heads and go with a custom cam from the likes of patrick g. use a thinner gasket to get tighter quench and i think u will be in the ballpark u r looking for. plus with the smaller cam u most likely wont be shifting ur car at 6800 rpm which will help the motor live longer.

Those heads are utilizing a pretty large runner volume which is going to hurt midlift flow and... torque and throttle response, due to a lack of air velocity. The smaller runner with higher flow of the AFR's and TFS and basicly most aftermarket castings (Terminator has a 200cc runner iirc) will really make a difference.

Yeah that will work fine too, that way you dont have to shell out a lot more $$. Flycut and run a .040 gasket and a mid sized cam.

Which 2.5's does he have the new ones or the old ones? The old ones had the big runner the new ones are smaller. Mill the heads and look at Patricks 224/228 thunder cam. Thunder cams make the most torque. I wouldnt go as big as 230 if your looking for power under the curve. The 224/228 is perfect for what you want. You wont even need to mill the heads but you could.

i have the newer 5.3's from TSP...they are very nice...but like I said, I am looking for more power under the curve....i also like the peak power of big cames though...that's why I was thinking about milling, running a thinner gasket, and flycutting...so I could have good quench and higher compression...

any thoughts?

how bout this....

keep what I have (since it is the most cost efficient way to do anything at the moment)

Send the heads to TSP and have them milled down a bit (I am not sure what the stock chamber cc is, but I guess maybe mill to 59cc)

Flycut the pistons, run a thinner gasket (or stock depending on compression after milling), and then hope that this brings a little more "oomph" back down into the power band....hell it may even increase my power a bit as well

I just feel that the set up has SO much more potential than what it is making now..I feel that the parts are mismatched at the moment, but can be turned into a match made in heaven...

any thoughts?

Not to dis TSP because I love those guys and am a loyal customert BUT they're cams arent the torquiest. Especialy the ms3/4. Those runners are 220 wich is still maybe a little big but look at what the heads flow.

You can certainly mill and run a thinner gasket and that will definately help your situation BUT you will not get anywhere near the power under the curve that you get with a 224/228 not matter what you do to your current combo.

The cam is not a low to mid range power cam. You want low to mid range with a decent top end then you know my answer. If you want mid range and top end power stick with what you have. OR have a custom cam ground by Patrick and Thunder to meets your goals. Those are the three options I see. Ok a 4th what gears are you running? Thats another way to make it more streetable.

ur not going to pick up much power in the bottom by milling the heads. its the cam. it wasnt meant to be used that low. id get one custom ground. fwiw ill be at 11.48 cr w/ a head milled to 60cc and a .045 gasket.

So this is what I am gathering:

Keep the heads (because I already have em), but mill them down a bit, and run a thinner gasket (maybe).

Get rid of the MS3, and go with something smaller, say a 224/228, or maybe even something in the 230's....

Then product of this equation will be a combo that has loads of torque and power in the mid range, up to say 6500, and will have plenty down low- something that will also be more streetable! Correct??

Hey T, what are the specs on that T2 and does a cam like that like spray? I was thinking about throwing a 50-75 shot dry kit on the car just for fun
