Don't get a Civic, the insurance on our '05 Civic was higher than my Corvette, Firehawk, AND the Mustang GT. They get stolen a lot, apparently.

Tercel, Corolla, Sentra, Miata, or any other tiny deathbox will work. But honestly, a 6-speed LS1 Corvette will pull down 32 mpg on the highway too.

If it were me, it would be a Jetta TDI. Not a bad looking car and I think it get gas mileage in the 40s.

Avoid a VW. I've heard nothing but bad things about their reliability.
I'd get a Mazda 3 or Protege. Preferbly a wagon version because you can haul more crap. They handle nicely as well.

4 banger Accords or Camrys are good on gas and a lot nicer than the smaller shitboxes like a Civic, Corolla, or Cavilier. Or anything GM with the 3.8 V6. Decent but not shitbox like gas mileage though.

A shopping cart with a weedeater motor.....

ha, seriously, Id check out the new Malibu coming out. Im not sure if your looking for something brand new or what, but that thing looks good for a midsized car. Comes with either a 2.4l 4banger or a 3.6l 6banger w/6spd auto. But like most said a ls1 driven easy on the highway will break into the 30mpg range often.

Highway mpg isn't nearly as important as city mpg. I don't know anyone who drives 80 percent or more highway. One of our daily drivers is an 04 Saturn Ion, it is rated at 24/32. On the highway it gets right about 32 if the A/C isn't running, but commuting in terrible west Houston I-10 traffic with stop/go max 20mph crap the average mpg from tank to tank ends up being in the 25.5-26.5 range.

You end up doing that if you live 2 miles from the interstate, school is 2 miles away, bars are 2 miles away, you can walk to the grocery. Work is 30 miles away on the interstate, so I usually get 21-24mpg with my "gas guzzling" Camaro

My father has an '05 Honda Accord. He gets 29 mpg mixed. He's gotten 36 mpg strictly highway. That's decent gas mileage for a sedan (4 door).

Yeah, I know too many people with TDI horror stories.

Saturns are cheap and cheap to insure. Not too mention great mileage.

what horror stories do you know of. only ones i've heard of is the ignorant owners accidently putting gas in them and minor injector problems
