Default stupid newb question

Need to add fluid to the clutch master reservoir......Open the cap and most of the reservoir is taken up by a black rubber piece. Do I pour the fluid into the rubber piece or remove it, fill, and replace?

common sense would tell you to remove the rubber piece then replace.

Yay for common sense. Just be really careful, that stuff will tear paint away in a second

I tried common sense, but shear terror overtook me. The reservoir is near empty so the rubber peice takes up 90% of the reservoir. I guess I can just compress it?

just pull the rubber piece out. If your reservoir is near empty you've got a leak. Check around the clutch pedal linkage for leaks in the master, and check under the car for a leak at the slave. There's a slit between the bellhousing and gearbox where the fluid will leak out.
