Default budget 408

i recently spun a rod bearing about right after my cam install.........i dont want to do all this work and put stock cubes back in but i only have 4k to spend right now........i was wondering if i could get away with getting a 408 shortblock from TSP and bolting my stock ls1 heads back on untill i save enough for heads

I started out with a 4k build for my 408, I think its up to 8k now, and I haven't bought the new tranny yet, nor have I upgraded the rearend. Might just try and find a good used crank, get new rods, pistons, and a little block work and rebuild your current motor.. I could see you doing that with 4k, maybe having money left over for new valve springs and some other stuff as well..

You can get a short block from many of the sponsors on this sight for a little over 4k but you still got to pay to get the engines changed out. I dont know if your LS1 heads will work or not but still be prepared to spend over 4k cause there are always suprises.

well texas speed has a iron 408 shortblock for 3600......i also failed to mention i currently have SLP longtube headers, stage 4 clutch, Viper tranny, Moser 9inch rearend, TSP cam, comp valve springs, ls2 timing chain, ported oil pump, and so on the only thing i dont have is heads........i thought if the ls6 heads work good on a 408 i can get away with the ls1 heads for now untill i get some ported ls6s
o and i also do all my own work so no labor charges apply

Hey buddy,
Check slp's thread in the GenIV section they have a 402 for 4366 and you could get the l92/l76 package for the price of 1795 That is a done deal for 6000 if you could sell one of the kids or something lol. Good luck man.

If you are doing a 402-408 you need a set of heads that are compatible with a 4.00 bore or bigger.

^^^^ i agree. i would check with tsp and check prices on a 408 or 416/418 longblock with the l92/76 setup. trust us,it would be much better now to go ahead and get it like you want instead of choking it down and having to go back into it. hit up your banker or cc for a small 1 year loan or something. just my $$$$
