The dust boot on my shock absorber is cracked. Is that a big deal?

The dust boot on my shock absorber is cracked. Is that a big deal? I'm doing a swap tomorrow and the dust cover on my old shock is cracked a bit at the top. Should I just go ahead and transfer it over to the new one? The new ones don't come with dust covers.
Or... could I use the covers from my rears and just change the rears when I find some new ones
