Was driving down a very steep crooked road here in Oahu, and the car lost third, as i was in that gear.Then I shifted down to second, and she was gone too. So, I coasted to a safe spot. I put it in first and it went in and held while I drove to a safe spot.Checked fluid and it was overfull by a quart. I put it in first as the fluid was not brown, but a nice pink color and smelled fine. I then retained 1-4th. It slipped a little going into gears 2-4. If I manually shifted the transmission it was delayed in shifting but hit hard. I then put it back in 4th and slowly drove home and it went all the way through the gears and I just got home.
I was going to drain some fluid out and make sure it is full, and not over full.
Any other things to check?
The TV cable is set and not loose, and the tranny has less than a 1000 miles on. The converter was redone by Vigilante as it was recommended when rebuilt. It also has, and has had before the last rebuild, a Trans Go shift kit in 3rd stage, or whatever stage it is before you make the tranny a full manual valve body.
Dexron III was used, and I have a BeCool radiator with a 7 row 24,000GVW internal to the radiator and a external cooler. Runs around 160-180 degrees, using my laser gun to check fluid temp. Not the most accurate but all I have.

Well, I changed the filter and fluid. No change. now all I have is 1 and reverse. If I rev it up real good it will finally shift into 2-4th. But, I am thinking it is a gonner.

Is this a 700r4 , If so the throttle valve may be stuck. Was there any shiny particals in fliuld , Is the TV cable hooked up?

The Pan was very clean, so was the filter. The fluid was nice and red, not dirty.
I did check the level and it was high, so when I was refilling it I got it to low on cold, slowly went through the gears then idled around the block. Then I rechecked the fluid, and added about a pint, and poof it was over full again. My car idles at 950, does that make a difference.
ALso, how do you unstick a tv cable, as mine is the 700R4/4L60.
And yes the cable is hooked up and it was marked when I left the tranny shop and pressure was checked.

What can go wrong with that? Springs or weights fall off? Is this a common problem?

There is a valve inside it that can stick and cause a problem similar to what you have explained. As Frank said a sticky TV valve can be an issue as well. Might want to contact your builder.

My builder and I arent exactly on speaking terms after he wrecked the back of the Vette. I need to do things myself now.

Thanks. On the TV cable check, do I remove the pan and see if is binding?, and how would you check it by yourself? How would I know its not "right".
On the governor, is it a visual to see if it is broken or missing things like springs or weights?

Well the throttle valve can be a little difficult to determine without removing valve body.I would probably check the GOV as Vince said first, Look for damage drive gear, Hold it with the gear up and push the weights at bottom in and out the valve inside should move up and down. Or just swap the govenor and try it , If its not that then likley its the throttle valve.

Might want to throw a pressure gage on it. Bung is on the driver's side of the case and let us no what you have in each gearshift detent at idle.

I will be doing the governor this morning, at least checking it.
On the TV cable, can I look at it from the position of having the pan off and verifying it is connected?
My pressures were, prior to this 90 at idle and 211 at WOT.
I will see if I can check it today.

Well here is the governor. Looks good, no wear. Had a green and white spring in it.All GM stuff, as this was and has never been changed.

Checked the operation of the TV cable.Had my daughter floor the gas pedal a few times and it moved the TV cable and the plunger in and out. Granted I dont know if this means its okay or not, but it showed me the system was/is moving.

If the operation of the TV cable is good, does it mean that the tv cable is okay? And maybe the TV valve itself within the valve body is bad?
If I take the valve body off, will the tv valve section be seen and able to tell if anything is bad?

Yes you can tell if you get it of and you need asistance PM and I will try to help but generally if the TV valve sticks in a vehicle thats been in service a bit then there are ussually contaminates from something else causing it to stick

I will try to get some time to take the valve body out.
Hopefully it will be an obvious thing I see, if there is any contaminants.
I hate doing this on my back and having to put the valve body in. If I remember right, their are little steel ***** need to be vasolined up into the tranny?

I took my valve body out. The plate and gasket are still in there as I didnt take the other parts holding it up. The TV valve was not letting me pull the valve body down as it snagged it, but finally I wiggled it loose. That valve body is heavy when you are on your back.
The TV cable didnt have any check ball in there, that I saw. So, I will recheck the FSM and see if there is supposed to be one that is obviously not. Would the tranny work without it?
Pictures of anyones 700R4 valve body would be nice.

NE one have the TRANSGO instructions. The FSM for my Vette has reference to 4 steel *****, one being a large copper looking one for the TV valve. Well, when I dropped the valve body, mind you the plate is still up there, there were only two *****, on large and one small steel.
