the block only has a few differences like the valley, but the engine has a different cam and heads flow better with smaller combustion chambers for a bump in compression ratio

LS1 and LS6 are both 346cu all aluminum. Same bore and stroke.
LS1: 97-04 vette (base), 98-02 F-body, pre-05' GTO
LS6: 01+ Z06 vette (I might be wrong about the beginning year)
LS6 basically had a newer block with better components (oil pump, heads, valvetrain, etc.) It has a very lightweight valvetrain and higher redline then the LS1. People generally use the LS6 intake manifold, heads and oil pump on their LS1's.
The LS6 doesn't have any more potential though and I've seen people argue that the LS1 block is stronger (just argument, nothing proven that *I* have seen). The LS6 is an awesome motor but the LS1 can do everything the LS6 can I believe. The LS6 also has a better PCV system.
The LS6 intake manifold is found on 01+ LS1's and some 02 Fbodies got the LS6 block as well. The LS6 cylinder heads (243 casting) are much better than the LS1 heads (853 & 241 casting).

Also, The LS6 block has "windows" inside the bottom of the block between the cylinders to allow better crankcase breathign or something ike that. And supposedly the LS6 block is cast in a slightly different way that the LS1, but im not positive of that.
In addition to the head differences, the intake valves on the LS6 are hollow and the exhaust valves are sodium filled
I heard 15% of 2001 f-bodies and 25% of 2002s got the LS6 block. My 2001 SS had the LS6 block which i found out after removing it(due to broken rod/cracked block)
It is said you can ID a LS6 vs LS1 block by a round casting "pedastel" on the front of the pass side right in front of the head. The LS1 blocks have the raised pedastel, and the LS6 dont.

Its a valley cover based PCV instead of the valve cover. It helps reduce oil consumption. Not a terribly difficult swap.
