View Full Version : got a 1997 WS6 get shit milage

i just bought a car that has 100k on it. new opti. i am in town getting about 12 mpg. i know i should get more than that. when i cold start it. takes about 3 to 4 seconds of cranking while having the throttle open a little. it always smells rich as hell and also my temperature guage goes in upwards of 220-235 range. my friend thought it could be the temp sending unit on the heads. but i dont want to dick with trying to check that right now if its something with like the fuel pressure reg. any opinions are greatly appriciated.

You can guess all day long....but, until you hook up a scanner to see what the sensors are saying, you'll never know. Could be a temp sensor, it could be O2 sensors, etc.

only thing is that it always has to crank for like 5 seconds just to start and it always smells like gas. i dont really know what to look for. i was thinking possible sensor on the head. i dont have any codes being thrown. anyone have some suggestions

Based on the symptoms, I'd check for leaky injectors / fuel pressure regulator or improper fuel pressure. That would be a good place to start.

what would it do if the fuel regulator is bad. and also what is the pressure supposed to be at

Fuel pressure should be around 38-39 at idle. Unplug the vacuum line on the FPR to simulate WOT and pressure should jump about 4 psi.

If the FPR was bad, you'd probably see improper fuel pressure. Also, you may have a fuel leak at the FPR.

my check engine light went on and i ran a check on that. and says the left bank o2 sensor is faulty or some BS. and right bank 02 low voltage. could that deal with the hard starts. i know thats definately a factor of gas milage and richness.

When you put the gauge on it to check the pressure, turn the engine off and see how long it takes to lose pressure. It should take ~30 minutes to drop IIRC. If you have a leak, you will see it start to drop almost immediately.
