First of all I love to street race so please don't get the wrong idea and think that I am on some anti-street racing soapbox.

Can anyone tell me what the laws are regarding street racing? How many points are involved? Can my vehicle be impounded? Is this a civil infraction or a misdemeanor?

Let's say I am racing another car on a public street going 90 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. What are the actual consequences? Does anyone have any stories re: being busted for street racing?

And yes I did do a search for "laws" and came up empty. Thanks.

Depends on where you are, and what the circumstances. Some states impound your car, sometimes its at the officers discretion/

I was wondering the same issues, I have even tried calling lawyers here in MO, however none of them are willing to help me unless I have a case to give them. I couldn't find anything online either.

I am not an officer of the law so I don't have any hard and fast answers for you, but I am sure they (laws) vary depending on your rural area ( county/state).
I CAN tell you that in New Hampshire a few *cough*many*cough* years back, going twice the posted limit is an IMMEDIATE cuff and stuff and a free ride in the nice cruiser as well as a courtesy talk with the desk sergeant. They even have finger painting ( printing ) etc. I got popped for a 132 in a posted 45.. Long story we can skip for the moment. And more recently here in Washington State I got popped for 100 + in a posted 70... Seeing as I HAD a clean record for the last decade here in WA. He let me off easy with a Negligent in the 2nd degree ..after talking to a couple of county sheriffs that come in the shop, he could have indeed got me for reckless operation which also comes with a free ride in the nice cruiser.. as well as a large ass ticket. The Negligent <sp>? came with a 500 tag..If you drop the hammer... sooner or later you are GOING to get popped... I have dozens and dozens of times I got away scott free for being stupid, Karma is a bitch..If you are worried about it... My advice is don't do it.
Just my advice, which is free.. and you get what ya pay for :)

Chances are you will end up in jail for vehicular manslaughter, with your vehicle impounded, and a guilty concience for the rest of your life.Just some possibilities from racing in public streets.

if you are doing 90 in a 45 htf(how) will a cop even get close to you....he is either sitting still or going the other direction

This is strictly a hypothetical example. Let's say the cop is hiding in the median behind a group of trees and he guns you. He then radios his cop buddy who is waiting up the road for you.

Are you guys kidding?

Street Racing in the eyes of officers usually just as bad a drunk driving. I know in Arizona and Idaho that if you are caught street racing, it's a reckless driving ticket + impound + thrown in jail.

Reckless driving = SR22 insurance and ALOT of money. Your call if you want to take the risk.

you can lose you car, and licence in FLA. I think you can go to jail if its real bad.

They just passed some new deal here now where if you even get caught speeding 30 over the limit its a court date..

In NC its pretty strict. Any speeding 20mph or more over the speed limit is automatic license suspension unless you get it reduced. Once your speed hits 90mph, it's usually unreduceable and that usually carries a one year suspension. Thats just for speeding. Add racing to the mix and things get ugly pretty quick. As a general rule of thumb, if a cop catches you street racing, they will usually get you for at least speeding and reckless driving. Reckless driving is usually a criminal offense. Any form of racing is usually enough to rack up enough charges to take the driver to jail on a misdemeanor. Along with that comes the car getting impounded. In NC, any type of pre-arranged racing on the street is possible car seizure. Keep in mind, when you decide to run, things are now upgraded to a felony. If you get caught committing a felony, chances are whatever you committed the felony in, or used, becomes property of the police department. If you want more specific answers, refer to the DMV manual that you were supposed to study and get tested on when you got your license.

After another Google search for Michigan traffic laws I found this -->

Section 257.626a

MICHIGAN VEHICLE CODE (EXCERPT)
Act 300 of 1949

257.626a Drag races; prohibition on public highways; definition; prima facie evidence.

Sec. 626a.

It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle upon any highway, or any other place open to the general public, including any area designated for the parking of motor vehicles, within this state, in a speed or acceleration contest or for the purpose of making a speed record, whether from a standing start or otherwise over a measured or unmeasured distance, or in a drag race as herein defined.

“Drag racing” means the operation of 2 or more vehicles from a point side by side at accelerating speeds in a competitive attempt to out-distance each other over a common selected course or where timing is involved or where timing devices are used in competitive accelerations of speeds by participating vehicles. Persons rendering assistance in any manner to such competitive use of vehicles shall be equally charged as participants. The operation of 2 or more vehicles either at speeds in excess of prima facie lawfully established speeds or rapidly accelerating from a common starting point to a speed in excess of such prima facie lawful speed is prima facie evidence of drag racing and is unlawful.

Neither of you are necessarily wrong. Actual speed competition, or street racing is enough to be taken to jail on criminal charges in almost every state I can think of. The difference is a lot of the time the officer decides to be nice and just write a ticket instead of you having to deal with the hassle of going to jail, going through the booking process, having someone pay bail, ect. Also, sometimes the cop just doesn't want to be bothered with all the trouble of doing that, or they might have more important things to do. An example is getting caught driving with a revoked license. In most states thats a misdemeanor. 99% of the time you go to jail. I have seen a handful of times where a cop has you call someone to get the car and just writes you a ticket without hauling you in. It's rare, but it does happen. Police are allowed to use discretion to decide whats best for the situation. Thats where a lot of confusion comes in.

all i can say is get a radar detector and hope for the best. about a month ago i passed a cop doing 100 in a 45....directly behind a camaro....the cop pulled out with the siren blasting and lights going, then played mind games w/ us, turning them on and off prior to pulling a Uturn, leaving myself and the guy in the camaro with our hearts in our throats. Im from PA and the cop was a state trooper, not sure how kind other state troopers are.

Sometimes I read the kill stories here and almost feel bad that I never street race. I can't exactly post my track kills here. But then once and awhile I read a thread like this and I remember exactly why I never street race.

My license will never be suspended, my car will never be impounded and my butt will never be in jail. At least not for racing

Not to mention the obvious. I'll never have to worry about losing by bus lengths to one of the many 12 second cars that trap 120+ :jest:

What a wonderful philosophy. I wonder what other laws we can ignore under those same guidlines?

You're short on cash. Don't be a pussy....pull out a gun in a bank and demand cash....don't be a pussy.

You're angry at someone. Don't be a pussy.....beat them unconscience with a tire iron.....don't be a pussy.

Some guy named Tiny has singled you out in the prison shower. Don't be a pussy.....bend over and take it like a prison bitch.....don't be a pussy.

Oh wait. I guess that last one is like being a pussy

I have a friend that's a cop. I'll ask him what the laws are out here but I'm pretty sure it's the basics such as loss of license, big fines, ect.

Well congrats on being lucky, we should name a holiday after you. I'm sure that you've never been let off by a cop when you should have recieved a ticket. It's all on the cop's perception of what happend. If you read the post a little more thoroughly, it wouldn't say THIS IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!

I'm not saying that there are LESS pentalities out there, but he asked, "What could happen." And having your car impounded as wreckless driving, thrown in jail, and court is something that CAN and HAS happend in Idaho.

I think that the 'impound-license forfeiture-jail-court thing', is a Federally mandated program under FALCON [Federal And Local Cops Organized Nationally], and that is why it is an option being used all over the country now.

It's a whole new world now.

Texas = Class A misdemeanor...same as DUI. You go to jail if the cop decides to do so and spend the night. Then comes the tickets/fines/possible loss of license/being gang raped while in jail... (not speaking from experience of course)

I know some guys in the Texas forum that would purposely get caught just for that last one...stupid faggots...they sure do love the cwock. :gay:

Im in the police academy in Fulton County Georgia out side of Atlanta. As a part time street racer i know the law's. Down here its reckless driving, suspension of license huge fine around if not $1,000 free trip to jail, well the rides free, traffic school and $220 dollars to get your license reinstated. So if you got cought speeding 55 over and the cop was sitting still, before you got to him i would allready have down shifted to 3 and came passed him around 120mph and never let out, so by the time i would have gotten to the other cop the spedo when have been pegged at 150.

That's why I dislike street racing. That's not to say I won't line up against someone and hit it (obviously, it's why my LS1 is broken) but I will only go to 90, by then, I've usually made my point. What I find more problematic are the little trailer things that say "Your speed:" and have the little digital readout and the lights on top, I always want to see how far up the speedo I can get before passing one. (It's been 103 so far but this is on a road where the cops are incredibly scarce, so they stick this thing out there to scare speeders)

BTW, it's Reckless, not WReckless! Wreckless, besides not being a real word, implies that you are without wrecks, where reckless implies that you are dangerous.
I know I've said this elsewhere, but bad grammar and spelling is a pet peeve of mine.
Carry on!

The only problem of have, is how many cops break the law? Hipocrits at it's finest. If they are not in pursuit, they are suppose to do the speed limit like everyone else. Same for the HOV lanes, they are not suppose to ride in them. However, every day, I seem them in the HOV lanes doing 85+ in a 65 zone.

^ Can't say I blame them, I'd do the same thing. ...But then again, I'd be a lil more lenient when I catch people speeding than some other cops are. Here, I've seen cops speeding, switching lanes with no turn signals, passing on the right, etc. I won't complain though because there have been a couple times where I've sped by cops around here and thought I was busted, but they didn't do anything. One time I was drifting a traffic circle (didn't see anyone around), as I exited the circle I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw a Caprice drifting and trying to exit the same place where I exited it, I slowed down so I can see him finish it and catch up to me, but he lost it, spun out, went up on the curb and into the grass. Not a second later, I saw a cop pull him over. If the cop saw him, he had to have seen me too, but didnt bother with me I guess cause I didn't lose control, lol.

The cops around here don't much like street racing either but when we line up, it's in the middle of nowhere, no driveways, crosstreets, houses or anything else. They sometimes will roll out because the farmers call 'em but they never stake it out or bust anybody.

Yeah, I only do it at the one, it doesn't have anything really useful, it's just got a radar and lights. I avoid the rest like a field full of zombies because I know I'll lay on it and get myself arrested.
