Default I have a BIG problem

Ok guys, I think I blew a rod or something in my car. It makes a really loud pinging sound and I took it to a mechanic and he basically said I need a new engine...said it does sound like a blew a rod or something. Now my question is, he said it is going to cost me around $2800 for just parts for a rebuild...not including labor. I'm thinking while I'm in there I may as well get my moneys worth you know. I don't know much about cars that much....i just know I like them fast. What would some of you suggest to do? Maybe like a bigger better block? any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

**** if he is quoting you that much just call TSP & get a forged 347 for a few extra hundred bucks. Then no more motor worries. Here is a link, talk to Jon Reynolds. And if you got the extra money while your at it I'm sure Jon could work you a good deal on a set of heads & a cam to go with it.

Find out what the problem is exactly. Id say forge/stoke that sucker. Unless this guy is a ls1 guy i wouldnt just tell him to fix it, who knows what crap he would throw in there

I don't see a problem, I see a good excuse to get a nasty bulletproof 347

Of course I always look on the bright side of things.... No use crying over spilt rod bearings, right?

hmm....I like your idea big mike. I'm very upset about but I figured hell, I may as well get a faster car out of it when I take it to my trusty mechanic I'll let yall know for sure what it is, but the one already told me I need a new engine. so big mike...if I get that forged 347 will I need other accesories to go with it or will it come with everything I need? thanks for the quick replies guys

All accessories from your motor will swap over. Hell for that matter so will your stock cam & heads.

well I currently have a very small cam, my friend thinks a T1 from mti but its a very small grind, like 220/220...I just got the car a few months ago and it already came fixed up so I don't know exactly what it has because it was the guy before him that fixed it up. it has some headers, small cam, and a few bolt ons. can I get just a bigger cam with the new engine block from texas speed instead of doing the heads/cam package? I'm curious because I didn't see the price for just cams. But I was thinking of maybe going with the magic stick cam. Would I see a big difference in speed from going to a 220/220 cam to the magic stick?

this mite be dumb question, but if I change out my stock engine for this forged 347...will I see a difference in power with my old heads and cam?

Not really, it might even make slightly less power due to the heavier forged internals, but it would be lots more durable. Best bet is to swap cams while it is apart IMO.

are yall sure this engine is forged? and if i get this then all i need to do is put my old heads, intake, and cam on? im also thinkin of gettin a bigger cam while the engine is out....my old cam is MTI's b1 cam....would i need to buy any accessories to go with the cam? thanks for any input

I'd upgrade the springs and get hardened pushrods while you're at it. Might want to pick up a new set of Comp OEM lifters as well.

Yes, the TSP short block I gave you a link to is forged. And yes, your current heads, intake & cam will fit just like all your accessories. I would also suggest some lifters, but I'd go LS7 on those.

I don't think you can have any idea what to do until you get into the engine. Maybe you have a spun rod bearing and you can get away with polishing the crank and a new set of bearings. Maybe - though doubtful - the problem is in the top end. I wouldn't buy an entire new shortblock because of loud ping and what some "mechanic" said about it. I'd start with a thorough top end inspection, and if it's all good, pull the engine and look at the bottom end.
