Default Car is slow as Christmas

O MY Lord.. I just put a built 4L60E with a 3k stall put in my car about a month ago.. My car is hella slower now?? My car is slower all over the rpm/speed range? What can be causing this? DO i need a tune or something? I havent raced it at the track yet, but I just feel it!

I don't know what to say, other than something is not right! I just put a Performabuilt 9.5" 3000 stall converter in my old LT, and it picked up everywhere. Even thoug it went from dead hooking on street tires to completly destroying them at launch, I still picked up 2.5 10th's and almost 2 miles per hour in the quarter. I expect a lot more improvement once I get it hooked up with some drag radials.

I'm assuming that you have hammered down on it, since you say that it's sluggish all over the rpm range. A higher stall does feel kinda sluggish during normal part throttle driving. It's when your foot goes to the floor that the stall does it's thing.

Please give us a better description of the way it feels and what was your previous converter stall?

I had a regular stock stall in it.. Im not saying anything bad about your transmission..It does what it is suppose to do! no doubt... But I have street raced 2 cars that I should have really killed in the last two weeks and could not pull them. One was a 96 LT1(Mods unknown) and a 93 Foxbody 5.0..<---- Was a horrible car looks and sounds wise and we raced and he was right beside me. Now that depressed me and really put the icing on the cake. Performa, TO answer your question, I had a stock setup before I bought this transmission from you, thats what I have to compare it too

Well the stall is going to feel quite different than stock somewhat sluggish under lighter throttle and bellow stall speed. And some learning on how to handle the car with the different stall and I am assuming you installed the 342s which again would change the attitude of the car considerably , Also note that in some cars some tuning is helpfull and even needed. I know in street racing manytimes its from a moving roll also and with your gear change from 273 to 342 the when and how you downshift the car will be very different.
Also have you had the PCM reprogramed for the gear change yet?

Yes. I have had the gears for a long time. That was one of the first mods I did. Im still learning how to drive it of course.. I will say that from 50 mph my car doesnt go anywhere when I punch it until it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. What can be changed in a tune to help that!

You may need some shift point tuning , This I am not and expert at , How does the car feel and act if you just nail it from a standstill ? and stay on it like you would at the track ? Also what I would suggest is find someone local with a similar car and a 3000 stall and get them to drive and make the comparison. And as I have also found stalls are not for everyone , Some people prefer the feel and performance of the stock stall . I have run into that a few times.

punch from a stand still feels good while I am roasting the tires. But once it gets to around 4k rpms is when It feels sluggish. the rpms dont go anywhere for like a sec or two? strange isnt it!

That is odd I would have someone look at tuning and whats happening , Its sounds like the trans and converter are doing there job. But there may be some tuning ajustments that need to be made. I would look in that direction.

Maybe you need a cam to go with that stall , then it will pull. I know what you mean by just kinda quits pulling and i think its the stock cam just dont have what it takes..

you may just need to get used to driving a stalled car, there nothing like a stock converter. Have someone with a stall drive it and see if they think it feels odd

I have been driving stalled cars so much now a stock auto feels odd

for comparison, if my car downshifts to 2nd at 50mph, i'll be at the top of second (~95mph on 3.23s) in no time. it doesnt feel like its pulling as hard but you can watch the speedo climb pretty quick.

Need to tune your shift points. I know it made a whole lot of difference when I tune my stalled auto.

ok thanks guys..

spy2520- My car does the same. Its shifts to 2nd at 50 and doesnt feel like it pulls hard until it shifts. Now with old transmission with no stall that was my strongest area? Now I have to find another area that i like before racing anyone else

SOTP measurement is pretty inaccurate for most people.

Do you have before & after ET or dyno pulls?

im guessing that the tranny has a shift kit in it now(stock tranny + stall will make the shifts feel like forever)

as everyone else has said, get a tune. delete the torque managment and youll be happy.

how does it feel from a 30mph punch? that is probally the strongest pull for my car
