Default driveshaft breaks while idling through a parking lot...pic

Kind of wierd. Foot was riding the brake following a car through a parking lot idling.

Bang!

Put a new steel one in. This happened 3 weeks ago.

It was strange. I've had that thing since the day I bought the car in 1998. It's also been fine since I've had my 436 stroker (May 2002). Lasted a long time, 9 yrs.

But to break while idling was wierd. On my way to the gym that night I drove about 15 miles. Got on it a little but nothing out of the norm.

Drive shaft could have just been stressed from previous abuse and in fact you were very lucky it broke when and where is did imagine that break at 70 mph

Yeah, that would have sucked because the rear part that was still connected to the pumpkin was banging all around as it was spinning until I came to a stop. I stopped in about 10 feet. Nothing horrible but I'm sure it would tore things up if I were doing 60mph.

Picked up a brand new steal one for $50 sitting around a local speed shop collecting dust for a couple years.

Had it re-balanced and tossed it on.

I PM'ed ya a question about the tranny, did ya get it.
This was it basically:
My tranny has always "banged" hard into gear. I'm talking about going from "park" to "reverse" and from "reverse" into "drive". Going into reverse from "park" is really bad, going into drive is pretty hard too, but not as bad as reverse. The bolt holes on my flywheel/flexplate are actually stretched about 1/2".

I'm changing my flexplate this coming weekend.

Is there something you have that I can do to the tranny to make the shifts into gear easier. I have the 4L60E.

Otherwise the tranny is perfect everywhere else.

Where does your car idle at? Might want to lower the idle with the tune to help correct this.

My thoughts exactly.

My '94 has a Billingsley extreme Chromoly and my '02 has an ACPT Carbon Fiber. And, they both have loops. Nothing like a broken DS stabbing you in the *** to ruin your whole day.

I found out that the driveshaft on my car was replaced under warranty for breakage. The springs, shocks and panhard bar was replaced also at the same time. I believe it was at 11,000 miles. Rode hard and put up wet.

I understand the loop keeps the front half of a drive shaft from hitting the ground IF it breaks towards the front, so the car doesn't pole vault. But I don't think a drive shaft loop will do anything for you if it breaks where mine broke.

If you're on the highway, with a DS loop and it breaks like mine did, you're gonna have a wicked mess back there and you may lose the rear-end as that piece is spinning like a helicopter blade smacking the ground and bottom of the car.

The DS loop is for one type of breakage, a frontal break. It a life-saver mod. My break could have potentially caused thousands in damage IF I was hauling *** down the road.

You would need two loops, one up in front and one way in the back close to the yoke. If you had two loops, it could break anywhere along the shaft and you'll be safe from the pole vault and the damage it'll cause from smacking around at speed.

.

The Torque arm that I have on my '94 actually has 2 loops. I do not have the rear one mounted (it bolts on and off to the TA) because it does not fit with my true duals on the car. Point is, some TA's have provisions for front and rear loops.

Holy crap you idle at nearly 1000 rpm? That could be the reason you shift into drive hard...
