Default 4L60E - Someone school me on shift solenoids

What do they do? What causes them to go out? Do I need them?

Shift solenoids either trap or vent fluild from the circuit, They in doing this cause a valve to stroke directing fluild to certain gears causing them to apply or release. They can go bad in two ways , either mechanically either cant seal or vent fluild or electrically which will set a code when the windings either open or short the circuit electrically ,
You only need shift solenoids if theres some issue that indicates a solenoid failure, Other wise they are not changed as part of any routine maintenance.
