Default 402 and a Vinci/Crane Cam

I'm thinking about building a 402 stroker from TSP, and cam selection has me a bit confused. I have done some searching and it seems like most people go with a pretty big cam when they do a stroker motor. I want a good low end and mid range with good manners on the street. I will be using my AFR 205's which are milled to 63 cc's along with the Crane 1.8 rocker arms. I am considering their 099 cam (2200-6800) which is 232/240 on a 551 lift on a 117 LSA overlap is *64. another cam I am considering is their 060 (2700-6500) cam which is 228/232 551 lift on a 112 LSA overlap is *68. They do have another cam with the 232/240 on a .600 lift, but with the 1.8 rocker arms the total lift would be .630. Would there be piston and valve clearence issues? Out of these 3 which one would you guys pick?

Thanks,

Matt

I am building an L92 416 and I am thinking about the 060 also. Most of their cams are made by Crane. I am planning on calling VINCI and Crane to get there recomendation. You might want to do the same. The 060 has a good bit of overlap for a street cam, and my car will driven mostly on the street. I am also considering the 591 which may work better for me.

That 060 would be swallowed whole by an big cube setup. Looks like more of a cam for 346. You can go bigger and still retain good driveability and have a decent DCR.

I kinda like their 099 cam, but the LSa is 117. I talked to Joe yesterday and asked him if that cam could be made in a 114 LSA and he told me that it would be way to choppy. The XXX cam I'm running now was supposed to be choppy, and its smooth as can be in my LS1. I talked to TSP also yesterday and Jason was reccomending a 240/244 cam for the 402 setup. This seems a bit big. I'm hoping to make 500 + rwhp & torque. But I also want good driveability and some lope from the cam.

If you tuner is good that TSP can be pretty streetable. If know of another member here, msghuff, who has something like a 232-236 cam in his 402 and makes around 490whp.

I just talked to a Crane rep and he told me that he thought 060 cam was a good choice for my setup. He said that it would give me that choppy idle, but still be very streetable. He suggested a higher ratio rocker arm on the exhaust side for better flow with the Patriot 2019 head that I will be using. He suggested 1.7 rocker on the intake and maybe a 1.75 rocker on the exhaust. Keep in mind that I am running a 416 instead of a 402.

I would give them a call. Very helpful!

you guys really need a bigger cam setup. not over the top like but something that will take advantage of the extra displacement. a 23x/24x cam will act smaller than a tr224 does in a stock cube motor. maybe a little bit more radical but not much. get some lift/duration in there and take advantage of what you have.

Been There! Done That! I am going for durability and longevity, not so much all out power. With all the torque these motors make I will be fine. And if I don't like it I will change it!

Thanks for all the input guys. I ordered the 060 cam today. The tech at Crane thought it would be perfect for my setup. We will see how it all plays out.

Good choice. A 228/232 cam in a 408 is like a 218/222 cam in a 346. This will give you excellent street manners and good low end grunt.

Default 402 cam

check out my sig this idles fine and i drive it everyday,i may only get 15 mpg but i also have a turbo 400 with about 4500 stall,i dont understand why every one thinks these large cube motors want a small cam,i am telling you they are very streetable on larger duration cams,i would listen to patrick though i have seen advice he has given to other members and pay off with great results.good luck on your new motor and have fun.
