Default Welding oil pan on the block

Is it safe to weld my oil pan while it is still bolted to my block? Its an LS2 and I planned on leaving it bolted to try to keep it from distorting. I have the harness removed is there any other precautions I should take? Should I remove the oil pan gasket and bolt it to the block would that also help to keep it flat?

If not can you bolt it to wood or something.....

If you had no other flat surface you can do this. You do have to take off the gasket, though. The heat generated from the welding will disipate fast enough as to not hurt the block. Make sure the pan is completely clean, aluminum is very hard to weld when it's dirty.

Well the plan is to run it through the dishwasher one day when the wife is gone to clean it. I just wanted to use the block as it is easy doesn't require making a jig to bolt it too.
