Default New motor in an F-body, best way to go?

I'm buying a high mileage 2000 z28

Which would be the best motor to buy for a DD but with alot of HP/TQ

10,000 to spend or less
LS7- NOOOO hahah it retails for $17,000
No Ls1 either

Any suggestions?

Why not an LS1? Easily falls within budget, and can re-use a awful lot of what is already there. Weekend swap. You could build up an LS1 as an LS6 as well. Have you considered rebuilding the engine you already have??? What is the milage? Is it running poorly, or does it have bad compression? The LSx is good for a LOT of miles.

Not sure what your priorities are, but if it is a daily driver and cost of operation is a consideration, then how about a 6.0l truck motor that runs on regular gas instead of 92? Would save you 20-30 cents per gallon every time you filled up. You could do a power adder for those times you want to beat on it.

The Ls2s get 15-18 but i thought thats because the goats are heavier

leave it until you NEED to replace it. that way you can save up some more $$$. i would throw in the LS6 crate. you can buy a long block for lesss than $5K, but you'll need to swap the accessories. it comes with a water pump and vette and an f-body oil pans. only thing you'd need to better that motor is an LS6 manifold or better. plus a 6 speed cars get great gas mileage. i got over 500 miles to a tank a few times traveling from FL to NJ. you'd only get 15mpg if you were around town. on the HW, get 25+ easy.
