Since my last experiment with aftermarket speakers and the stock amp/deck didn't work so well, I want to swap an aftermarket amp in, run my Type Rs off that, and make a decision later about getting a second amp and some eD "subs" for the sail panels. Now, my question is, does the Monsoon amp use high-level (speaker level) inputs? Or will I need to do a high level to RCA inline converter?

Monsoon amp does use speaker level inputs -- so all you need is a line-level adapter. The "or" part of your question seems to contradict the first part -- is that how you meant to phrase it or is that a typo?
Stay away from the eu700s if you have "real" subs in the car.....if you want more midbass fill - go with the CDT M6 or something that will work better for that.

Correct, and when you go with some subs, make sure to get a good crossover.

Bit of a typo. Not sure if I want to use high level inputs, or a LOC. I've heard bad things about LOC quality (as far as musical reproduction), but I've never run an amp using a high-level input, either.
As far as the crossover, if I buy an amp and midbasses, I'd be getting a "sub" amp with a SSF and LPF, so I don't know that I'd really need an active x-over, like an AutioControl unit. I want to keep everything as simple as possible.
One question I do have is this - is the stock signal filtered at the deck, or at the amp? Or, does each speaker have an inline passive filter (I know the tweeters have something like that)? The tweets will stay on deck power, and I'll be running the front midrange off the new amp (figure I'll just tap the stock wires instead of re-running everything), but I'm not sure if I'll need to use the Alpine crossovers for those or not.
The M6s do look like they'd work well as a midbass driver, although I'd really have to think about where to put that second amp if I ran them, BUT, midbass is important to metal, so I might just have to do that when I get a bit of money. I don't have any actual subs (never plan to), but a well-designed midbass setup can accomplish a hell of a lot all by itself.

Line-level should sound better over speaker-level...though both not the best

For firebirds -- filter for tweeters is in-line at the tweeters. The amp filters your sail panels. If you can, I would definitely use the crossover's that come with your speakers since it was designed specifically for your speakers.

oh - I thought you were gonna be running subs.......type R's is very general..
