To do the PRO 5.0 or not
I have the factory Hurst shifter in my camaro. It's about two feet in length and should be on a truck rather than a sports car. Question is -- is the PRO 5.0 worth the 200 bucks or should I just stick with a 30-40 dollar short stick. I have friend with the same exact car as mine with a PRO 5.0 -- he says its great but he wont let me drive his car so I don't know if its worth the money for me. I can shift pretty quick on this stock shifter so I'm not really looking for "help" to shift any faster, of course a shorter stick would help. Its more for looks than performance, but if this 5.0 has something like a spring loaded 2nd to 3rd shift or some other special feature -- Than maybe I can justify the 200 bucks.
BTW .. Anyone know if they make a spring loaded 2nd to 3rd shifter for our cars like they had on the old GTO's and muscle cars. Anyone make one?? My uncle has a 69 GTO with a Hurst and when you tap that shifter out of second it shoots right into third and you barely have to touch it.
Thanks for any help/info:

well the Pro 5.0 has what they use on race cars. it has a beveled 2-3 shift, for guaranteed no-miss shifts into 3rd. the general consensus is that the pro 5.0 is notchy, but very firm and the b&m ripper is really smooth but crisp. in order to really make a decision, you should at least try it before buying it. you don't have to necessarily DRIVE the car. just sit in your buddy's car and see how it feels.
and about the spring loaded 2-3 shifts on the old muscle cars... my '78 has that as well with the BW T-10, but so does your current Camaro. the stick automatically sits in the 3/4 gate, so it's spring-loaded there. however, that won't help any with better shifting. the only reason it's so easy to snap into 3rd on the old muscle cars is because there's no gears after 4, so you can push as hard as you want over and you won't miss. also, the forks are much farther apart on the old trannys so it's easier to glide in and not miss, as opposed to the newer (much closer-sitting) and gates.
good luck with the decision and let us know what you do

I have a Pro 5.0 and love it. It is a completely different shifter than the old school stuff. If all you are after is cosmetic - go with a short stick. Otherwise, go with WS6 Store and a pro 5.0...

I changed out my factory Hurst for a Pro 5.0, chopped about an inch of the stick, any re-used the Hurst ****. Absolutely no regrets. I have also installed Pro 5.0s in the two 5.0 GTs that I owned previously...

pro 5.0, short stick, stock hurst ****, i love it and it can be a tad notchy but i like that firm positive feel. the internal spring is also stronger than the hurst so it returns to center alot easier which will make 3rd easy to grab too. plus the adjustable stops isnt a bad thing to have which the factory hurst doesnt have

I went from the stk Hurst to a Pro 5.0, UMI sht stk, and stk Hurst **** and I like it way better. It has a much more aggressive feel. Also the adjustable hard stops are huge because you can bang 4th as hard as you want to at the track (this is gonna happen from adrenalin anyway) and you'll never overthrow 4th & get it stuck in gear & bend the fork (& mess up other things) which is a somewhat common problem w/ stk/Hurst shifter.

been driving a stock hurst with a LSS for 5yrs....well worth the money.
i say save your money and just get the stick...it truely makes the shifter feel totally different...and much shorter.
my throws from 1st to 2nd are about 3.5" of **** travel...

I have been using a pro 5.0 for about 5 years now. I would never use another shifter.
The only problem you will find, is that if your car makes any big power down the road, it will be dificult to shift with a "short stick" and you will have to go back to the regular length pro 5.0 shifter handle.

I had a factory Hurst & added the UMI short stick because it is angled like a pro 5.0 stick is. I drove around like this for a week & then added a Pro5.0 & added the UMI short stick to it. I definitely like this combo MUCH better than the stock hurst with the short shifter

all i know is that i drove my LT1/t56 with the hurst (from an SS) and the LSS for 2 yrs...then wrecked it.
test drove an LS1 with the Pro5.0 installed and HATED the feel of the shifter. it was really stiff and i could barely find 3rd. i felt embarassed telling the guy i owned a 6spd car previously, cause i could barely drive his.
ended up buying a different LS1/t56 and installed the hurst and LSS from my old car (parted it) and have been happy with it ever second.
one of the best mods (any shifter really) you can do to your car. because no mattter how you look at it, you'll use the shifter ever time you drive....makeing it much more fun...whether you're just granny shifting around town or racing.
