Default 160F Thermostat!!!

Hey folks, my car (01 camaro ss SLP edition) still has the original thermostat in it and when I dynoed it few weeks ago the motor was running pretty hot, I guess the factory thermostat is 195F. Is there another benefit from changing to 160F besides it runs cooler? Since will run little coller, does that mean it might perform better at the track or am I fool of myself?

Keeps it a little cooler.....in theory I guess it adds a little power but I doubt it's enough for you to notice it.

In Florida with yalls temp & humidity is alot like Texas it would not be a bad thing to do.
You must also set the fans to work with that t-stat.
I have a 00 t/A and the gauge is only a little more than an idiot gage.
Cold,Normal,Hot.

If you install a 160 thermostat, the fans have to be programmed to work with it, otherwise its pointless. The car is not running hot. So in short, you will see no change with a thermostat. Its the fans temp that you would have to change.

In 99+ years the gauges became dummy gauges so to speak. The cars warms up and you dont see it move again. It just hangs out at the 210 mark, its normal. They changed it because people thought something was wrong when the gauge moved around so much. Well the problem is the people who dont know think something is wrong because the gauge doesnt move at all.

I imagine there is. They make gauges for everything.

I have a 160 t-stat on my 98. It keeps my temps to what my guages say are 185 (the line between 160-210*) or below. The fans go on at 185. It was tuned that way. Im pretty sure you can just reset the fans to go on at 185 and have the same effect.

There are a few threads about the uselessness of 160 t-stats, do a search. Many people are saying you'll loose MPG, but i havent yet. If you're worried about loosing MPG, throw on headers and get the MPG back

Other concerns evolve around 160's not letting the motor get hot enough to burn off gunk in the motor, etc. I havent noticed anything like that, either.

For whoever said the gauges dont move off 210 once warmed up........your wrong. I have the 160 tstat and programmer that turns on the fans and my gauge reads exactly what the temp is...stays around 180-185 instead of 210. I have the palm pilot that plugs in and the gauges reads exactly what the computer sees.

Then your the lucky one. Wish they worked in my 99, and I bet that everyone else 99+ wished theirs did too.

I have an aftermarket water temp gauge and it definitely reads differently from my stock dummy gauge. The stock gauge stays at 210* all the time like everyone said and my aftermarket gauge fluctuates between 185-190*.
