Nice kills...nothing too surprising, though. I haven't done much street racing but have had fun with the new Maxima and Altima on the highway up to about 120 and pulled on them, and some other BS kills on cars that never stood a chance.

What kind of numbers hp to the wheelS to do the 2006 Impala SS have?
I haven't race one YET
And is your car Stock??

James_v2

Bone Stock, dunno the power to the wheels, I have 30k miles on it and run midgrade gas in it(gets about 2mpg better with it and cheaper, plus no knock).

Define midgrade. . . .I don't think I would run our midgrade in an aluminum block car.

Here we have
3.09 - 89 Octane Regular+10% Ethanol
3.19 - 87 Octane Regular
3.29 - 91 Octane Premium

Lately I've had a couple of races with a guy that lives near me that has a 06' Eclipse GT 6spd. It might be modded because he's got some Injen, and Fujita decals on it. I've beaten him a couple of times now, but I must say they they are pretty quick. He always try's to sneak up on me and do a fly by, but lately i've been watching my mirrors pretty close for him.

89 Octane, While 91 Octane or better is recommended, I get no engine knock or reduced performance by running 89 Octane. I live in Maryland so we typically have 93 octane gas, but the key is recommended but not required. 89 does just fine and I average about 23 MPG in it with it.

^^^23mpg. . .highway??

I am amazed lately what kind of mileage I am getting, 6000 miles in. I did a long haul check (1400 miles). I average 24.7 mph and am getting 16.9 mpg doing that (I pretty much only commute to work on roads under 40mph.

I get 20.x mpg, with 50/50 city/highway driving.... and that's with the DOD disabled, so I'm always in v8 mode...

Overall, I get about 18 city and 28 highway, you see if you raise the Octane in fuel you get worse mileage as it needs to burn at a higher temperature. I've tried all fuel grades and 89-91 Octane is the sweet spot. Unless you have an engine that is at a compression Ratio of 11.0 or higher you really don't need to use high test as gasolines are a lot cleaner then what they were 10 years ago. An example of a car that can run on 87-89 Octane, has an all Aluminum engine and has a compresson ratio of 10 or higher are the new Toyota Camry V6 and the Corolla as they both have a compression ratio of 10.8. Your power will be slightly lower with the lower octane gas, but your mileage will be higher and you will end up saving about $2.00 a tank. Also if you wanna get better mileage you may wanna put it in 3rd gear unless you get it on a highway, I've found in 3rd gear on my car that I get about 1-2mpg more because the fuel delivery is more even when I'm going under 40MPH, and it is smoother. Try 89 Octane, I think you will find out that it is just fine for our cars. Just don't put any stuff like Citgo or low quality stuff in the car(Citgo is not top tier and barely makes EPA standards for gas)

Our cars get absolutely awesome Highway mileage I must add as well. I've gotten 32MPG highway on occassion when I've taken a trip. 4cyl mode + 1700 RPM at 60-65 MPH crusing = Best Hwy mileage I've ever gotten. You have to curb your addiction for speed and mashing on the gas with the car but our cars are able to equal or best a lot of the V-6 cars out there and some of the 4-cyl cars(granted turbo cars). Just remember that in 8 cyl mode we use about 50% more gas then in 4 cyl mode and use the instant mileage to help you keep in that mode. The car does about the same mileage as my old 2000 Maxima GXE and is a little bit better then a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am V-6 I owned before that. And to be honest, its a better made car then both of the other cars. You need to adjust your habits if you wanna succeed though.

Have you experienced better mileage in 3rd around town, is that what you were eluding to ?

James_v2
06-08-2007, 01:36 PM
Yeah, it seems to do a lot better.

06MonteSS
06-08-2007, 01:45 PM
interesting... since DOD doesn't work if not in D, and the stop-n-go around town would tend to provide worse mileage....

I know if I drive around in third, I get 2 or 3 less mpg...

James_v2

DOD is only good in 4th gear and cruising, for city driving 3rd gear seems to get a little bit better.

If in drive my car kicks into 4 Cyl mode in 3rd only if it is on drive. If you baby the gas it will go into 4 cyl mode a little after 25 mph. So i am not buying the better in third, unless you have DoD turned off anyway. And even then how would it be diffrent? the mappings should be the same for a stock tune right?

Overall, I get about 18 city and 28 highway, you see if you raise the Octane in fuel you get worse mileage as it needs to burn at a higher temperature.

Old wives tale...all Octane does is raise the flash/ignition point of the fuel. As the temp rises as the air/fuel mixture is compressed and, obviously as the volume it occupies drops, the temp goes up. It can get high enough (depending on compression and combustion chamber shape, etc) to ignite the fuel before the spark plug fires. Leading to all sorts of nasty consequences if it goes on unchecked. Higher Octane fuels use the exact same long chain carbon molecule known as gasoline as the lower, the only difference are additives that inhibit the ignition of the fuel until a higher temp is reached (ideally, the extremely high temps given off by a spark). Once the gasoline ignites, it is an exothermic reaction, meaning it gives off more heat than it needs to start the chemical reaction. The resulting temp is what actually ignites the other air/fuel mixture in the chamber as the temp is high enough to light off the rest of the mixture after the spark starts a relatively small amount of fuel burning. The flame will propogate at the same speed regardless of Octane, the energy given off will be the same. Once gasoline vapor starts burning, it burns hot enough to set off the rest of it, even without a spark. Octane increase only raises the start temp at which the fuel will flash over. Does nothing after that.
