Default Why isn't there a gasket between the oil pump and the block?

It just seems odd to me that the oil pump bolts directly to the block, and no gasket or RTV goes around the hole where oil goes from the pump to the block. My new block has some scratches around there, should I put a light ring of permatex around it? It's already together but I don't have the balancer on yet, so it would still be easy at this point.

Ive never heard of anyone doing this. Hopefully some of the more experienced engine builders will come in and comment on this.

Isn't there supposed to be an O-ring there?

There is no o-ring, I think there should be. I always use some RTV, not too much though.

No no no! Leave it alone! You have two highly machined surfaces, no gasket or RTV required! This is oil you are pumping, not air. If you are saying the mounting surface on the block is damaged, that's a different story.

It wasn't too bad, I put a dab of permatex on my finger and rubbed it around. Super thin layer, enough to make up for the scratches I would say.

I'd install it dry. The surfaces are precision machined and finished. I wouldnt chance a thin layer of rtv skewing the pump out a thou or two.
