Finally got the cash, Cam time
Well, finally gettin around to cammin my TA. Right now it's running longtubes and true duals, the normal lid and filter up front. I want a cam that's gonna be streetable and I don't plan on touching the heads. At first I was looking at a hotcam but now I'm leaning towards a TR224 112. Gonna do the timing chain, oil pump and pulley while I'm down there. Lookin on thunder racing and probably gonna get it from them with the springs and rods, was wondering if I would need the new retainers from them as well? Or if the stock ones would be ok to reuse.
The car is an A4, so the problem of rippin the tranny apart is always in the back of my mind, that and the poor old 10 bolt. And since its pushing 93k miles I just wasn't sure what would be too aggressive or too much of a risk on the car, since I don't like the idea of putting in a new tranny or rear, especially on my daily driver.
The car's daily driven and sees weekend track use. Was lookin for some pretty good power, in the 370-390 horse range. While maintaining some semblance of driveability. I like the lopy qualities that I hear come from the tr224 112 and don't mind a rough idle. As long as the thing isn't stalling at every stop light. (not sure if thats an issue with the auto's) After driving a 396 nova for a few years, I don't have any problem with gettin shook around...hehe

I would get the following & call it a day.
Melling or LS6 oil pump
LS2 timing chain
GM cam bolt & gasket kit
Patriot Gold dual spring kit(comes with everything)
224/224 .563/.563 or .581/.581 112 or 114 LSA
7.4 chromemoly pushrods
Thats should cover you mechanically but don't forget about RTV & various other stuff like new fluids & what not. Also a dyno tune will be needed to get the car runnin right & to its full potiential.
Not sure if you would need a verter since your a auto. But I wouldn't worry about the 10-bolt bein a auto either as long as you don't run slicks. Plus the stock verter will help the 10-bolt live a little longer.

The cam swap would run about $1700 for just the parts (w/out install) :
- camshaft - $380 (TSP)
- hardened pushrods, double valve springs (seats, seals included), titanium retainers - $380
- timing chain - $36 / $130
- ported ls6 oil pimp - $140
- new gaskets - $50
- dyno tune - $275
- fuel injectors - $300
- fuel pump - $100

In no way am I a guru but I have been reading up on this alot lately. I don't think injectors a needed unless you go with heads and a big cam with 224 cam your stock injectors should be fine. I think you could even go a little bigger but it depends on what you like. Good luck with the swap are you doing it your self?

I had that on my list because I'm looking at a 237/242 duration - .603"/.609" - 112 LSA cam. Not sure about a 224 cam, but perhaps you would benefit from 30lb. injectors. New Era Performance has some 30lb. and/or 42lb. for under $300 advertised on their website. There is also a fuel injector size calculator in one of the stickies, but I haven't used it yet.

don't need injectors even at that size cam.
I chose to keep my original oil pump, injectors, and fuel pump. The 02 oil pumps are pretty good already, and the stock fuel system will be fine for a cam only setup. use that money to buy a converter, you don't want to try to drive an aggressive cam on the stock converter...

I may be going with a set of LS6 heads or 5.3L depending on my budget in the next 2 months. Will most likely need the fuel injectors then. To the original poster looks like you can get by without them.
