Default wet sand ruined headlight

Ok so my buddy who has wet sanded many headlights on camaros tried my passenger one which was a little foggy. Well afterwards the light is completely fogged over. He didnt know why. I was wondering if it would be possible to buff it out or do I need to get a new headlight?

Get new ones. Unless you really like wet sanding and polishing, and even then your lense wont look like a brand-new out of the box unit will.

If you go back and smooth it out with increasingly finer sandpaper, you should be able to polish it out wit some meguires PlastX. The stuff works wonders. The foggy part is only part of the process, keep going! Make sure to use a shitload of water too!

He used 2 stages of sandpaper and he did use the McGuires plastX. He told me what grits he used but I cant remember off the top of my head.

Anyway, when you guys do it how many stages of sandpaper do you do and what grit numbers? I will try it again this afternoon if I have time.

there is a write up for this that i followed, says to use novus polisher but you have to order that... just go to auto parts store and get plastx. here is the linke, has what grits to use also.

I used 4 or 5 stages of paper and finished with PlastiX...still didnt do ****.

Not that its the norm by anymeans. Some people have had great results with the above method, but typically when I hear people say what you have I think back to how horrible my lamps were and what my results were. Sometimes there isnt any revival.

I don't know if this is true or not? If you rub waterless car wash on scratched plastic lenses, ether fixes or highly improves them. Might be worth a try.Maybe someone else has heard or tried this?

if your headlights are that bad you might need to replace them

that doesnt sound like good information at all. As the other member said, progressivley going higher and higher in grit and finishing with a polishing compound will do it.

+1

Finish with the highest grit you can get your hands on and take an abrasive compound to it. I prefer metal polish myself.

Using a buffer to polish can save you hours.

Why isnt it? This way he can pull the old lights off, slap the new ones on and have crystal clear headlights without worrying about anything.

And this way - if he still wants to polish them out, to try and make a few bucks or have a backup set he can.

Use a buffer with a cutting pad if you have one. Plastx is junk. Got to a auto body or paint store and get some kind of rubbing compound. Worked for me.
