New shortblock 427, 440, 454+ daily driver??
I've searched and read up and talked a few sponsers and am even more confused than when I started. I'd really like some input from you guys. I'm a hobbyist I've owned a number of F-bodys and a Z06 but I'm not an engine expert by any means and this is a BIG investment I want to do right the first time.
What I have now: 473rwhp and 438rwhtq on Mustang dyno (w/nine inch)
https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamometer-results-comparisons/594436-388-all-bore-dyno-mustang-dyno.html
388 4.125 bore MTI MID LS1 resleeve motor
Stage III 317 TEA heads flowed 346 at .600 I believe and had good numbers everywhere chambers are for 4.125 bore
TPIS oval 90mm intake setup
1 7/8 Kooks (dyno was done with 1 3/4 Grots)
comp R lifters
New textrilla 0700
New tranny with all T56 goodies
3.89 Rear
Shortblock has stock rods and I have an opportunity to sell it for a good price.
Goals:
More HP and torque obviously, 550-600rwhp+ Over 500rwtq. Would like similar curve although wouldn't mind something a little "peakier" but don't want to rev it to the moon either. Would like good manners or at least as good as it is now with the MTI Z1 cam. Gas mileage not too much of a concern but would like to get decent highway mileage. 12+ minimum.
Not a race car just something fun to drive and go bracket racing everyonce in awhile.
I think the heads are a pretty good setup and would like to keep them. The intake and TB I figure I'm going to have to go with a ported FAST at some point. Everything has less than 2k miles.
At first I was thinking a 427 LS2 or LS7 but I also got a quote for a LSX with a 4.25 callies crank and I believe around a 4.18 bore for a very reasonable price. My budget would be somewhere around 7-8k for everything and I am going to need bigger injectors than the 30# SVO's I have now.
So should I just stick with the 427 or would it be beneficial to go larger? It is only a few hundred more. I am leaning towards the LSx for reliablity and longevity especially if I want to start spraying it.
What do you guys think? I realize a 402/AFR setup would get me where I want too, but more is usually better and I have this want to see what my heads could really pull off...
Thanks for any insight and comments!
Bobby

with that many cubes i think your heads and intake will be a restriction. something like a 454 cube motor wil need alot of air. you will probably still make decent power with your heads/intake but you'll be leaving quite a bit on the table.check out the vengeance 440 build with tfs 235 heads.if you had a 454 with those heads or a set of etp 245 heads with a good intake you would have a serious beast.

Build the 454, keep your heads and get a ported FAST 90. It will be a restriction, but if you plan on having this as more of a toy and not a race car, I think the lowend torque that your setup would produce would be more fun than a higher winding setup. Either way you will have a ton of power and should be a blast.
