My voltage is only 12.5v with the engine running so I suspect a alternator problem, the alt. has a 2 wire plug as well as the (+) wire, I was told to ground the black wire from the plug and connect the red wire to the (+) wire, is that correct? I figured I'd ask before I took it off and had it tested. Thanks in advance.

You wired it correctly. The alternator may be putting out a little or your reading would be below 12 volts and keep falling as it's running. It's not putting out enough to charge properly. I suggest a good 1-wire alternator form Powermaster or EastCoast Auto Electic.
