Default Which Oil would you recommend?

I am a life time, die hard Castrol user. Changing the Formula's oil for the first time. Is it best to use Syntec 5W30?

IF(and that's a BIG IF in some areas, but you'll have better luck in the southern portions of our state, it seems) you can find it the GC (German Castrol 0W-30) is one of the best. For summers in our area; the BC (Belgian Castrol 5W-40, even harder to find than the GC!!)

If not, in order;

Redline 5W-30 (winter), 1/2 5W-30 & 1/2 10W-40 (summer)
Amsoil 5W-30, or Series 3000 5W-30 (winter), Euro 5W-40 (summer)
Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 (winter), 5W-40 (summer, again, IF you can find this, the ONLY place I've EVER seen it is in NAPA stores)
PennzPlat is the definite "bargain" of the oil world, EXCELLENT stuff and they are almost paying you to use it when you get the $15.00 rebate deal from Pep Boyz (it prices out to $1.99/quart on that one!!!!! ).

The regular old Syntec 5W-30 is NOTHING special, probably only slightly better than Mobil 1 5W-30. For less $$$ I'd rather go with the Pennzoil Platinum mentioned above, if you don't want to go with the others, or can't afford/find them.

I disagree with the classification of M1 5w-30 as thin.

Mobil1 5w-30 viscosity is better than mid-pack in the 30w population, not at all what I'd call "thin".

And as for advising a thick oil, my LS1 just got an excellent oil analysis from Havoline Deposit Shield 5w-30. That oil is the next to lowest viscosity I can find in the 30w range. It was a short run, granted, but the trend was outstanding. See the used oil analysis here.

In fact, I have Castrol Syntec 5w-30 in the car right now. This oil IS the lowest visc 5w-30 I can find.

At least on one LS1, thin oil is not an issue at all, and I'd dare say it's an old wive's tale that may need another look...

Non synthetic, regular ole' oil thats been used for 100 years. 20-50, whatevers the cheapest.

I've got 80,000+ miles on my 436 stroker and she's purring like a kitten with 58psi of oil pressure on start-up and NEVER ever less than 40psi.

Oil is all hype. Kind of like air filters.
