Default What kind of idiot screws up a battery install??

seriously? how stupid do you have to be to screw up a battery install?

well, i'm stupid

a couple of weeks ago, my battery started leaking acid out the positive terminal just like the classic factory AC Delco batterys tend to do. on the upside, it's a 2001 car with an OEM battery, so...

well, i went to pep boys today to buy one of those 24 month replacement/84 month prorated energizer batteries made by johnson controls. i came to the conclusion that that's where the money is best spent - 650 CCA, $69.99, not bad. well, i went to disconnect my battery in the parking lot so i had a core to give them (i'll be damned if i'm paying the extra $10-$15).

well, i brought a ratchet with me and the proper attachment. the negative terminal, as always, came off like butter. the positive terminal is REALLY jammed on there because i have a power wire from my aplifier ran into it. well, i went to turn it and it wouldn't budge. i turned it harder, and i stripped the bolt on the end of the terminal

so the damn terminal is still stuck on the battery like it's held on with eterna-bond superglue and the bolt is stripped. how in the HELL am i gonna get this off? i ran to napa and got some of that battery terminal cleaner that gets rid of corrosion. i'm going to clean off the terminal, but i'm scared to take a set of pliers to it or anything for fear that i'll make it even worse.

after i spray it on, what's the BEST way to remove the terminal now that the bolt end is stripped? i can't believe i screwed up a battery install

go to sears. i think they make a kit of some kind that will let you get off stripped bolts...otherwise just take the pliers to it and use some elbow grease

Yep, vice grips will do it, and we won't tell a soul you used them.

in the future, get some flare wrenches so that you have less chance of stripping smaller fasteners like that

Wow that is really something. You should keep calm because you get a little hasty and things like these happen.

Can you get a video and some pics posted to show the rest of us how not to remove a battery. Seems like the simplest jobs can be the worse doesn't it. I hate to ask, but you actually have a power wire jammed in between the battery terminal? I know (hope) you must have mis-typed that sentence.

Vice grip, then get new terminal bolts.

Also, if you are this inept at batteries, I'd hate to read your "I f***ed up my header install"... post

Unbolt the wedge piece that holds the battery in place to see if it will give you a little more room. Like everybody else said, just use some vice grips and remove it. If for some reason it breaks off, it really doesn't matter because you're pitching the battery anyway. You'll need a new bolt for the positive side since you've already stripped it.

Worst case......Buy a new bolt and spend the $10 for them to remove the old one. At least you know it was money well spent at this point! HAHA
