General LSX Automobile Discussion - C5 Z06 question

Recently I was looking under the hood of a 02 Z06 and noticed 241 casting heads. This puzzled me. I was under the impression that all LS6 engines had 243 castings. This car looked to be a legitimate Z06 as well and the owner seemed to be fairly knowledgable about his car. He told me that only 03/04 Z06's had the 243 casting heads.
I was recently looking into getting some 243 heads, but seeing heads advertised as "LS6" heads is confusing now because I am not sure what casting they are. Can someone shed a little light here? Search hasn't worked for me in about 2 months.

01-02 z06 are LS6s and have 243 heads I believe. Maybe his is a clone.

a clone huh? That is what I wanted to tell him. But I wasn't sure because it was badged just like a Z and had the correct rims and even the interior trim. So you can confirm that no Z06 from any year came with 241 castings?

well it should be a FRC for sure;) Along with being a 6 speed. Also you can check the codes in either the glove box or wherever they are in the Z06's. Should have that as an RPO although i cannot be certain. That'd be a good start...

well i know the 2001 z06 were a bit diff, but i believe they were still the 243 casting,
i think that guy might have bought a fake or just put on a good show with his FRC.

all years? or at least 02?
If thats true, I guess i'm gonna have to break it to the guy that he is just a clone.

Could not be the original engine too.

^^Exactly, could be a LS1 with a LS6 Intake..the LS6 that was originally in it if it's even a Z06 could of messed up.
Look at the Valley Cover and see if you can see a Breather Hose coming from the right front area under the Intake. If nothing there, then it's a LS1.

I thought both 241 and 243 were LS6 casting. Huh. *shrug*

ok, this might be the only way I can tell just from looking under the hood. I guess he could look up the VIN as well to find out for sure. Man, he is gonna be pissed.

There are no 2002 FRC vettes, so it can't be a clone. 2000 was the last year of FRC.
Maybe he has ported/polished LS1 heads, or maybe sold them and slapped LS1 heads (and/or motor) to get by on? Anybody's guess here.
All the 01-04 ZO6's have 243 heads.
Peace,
Craig.

thanks, this was exactly the info I was looking for. I'm pretty sure this guy would not swap out 243's for 241's. He just seems to know a little about the car. Apparently he doesn't know his car is supposed to have LS6 heads instead of LS1. Thanks for the info.

Vin can have a Z06 code..but that don't say anything about an Engine Swap at one point in time.. :judge:

why would someone swap a LS1 for a LS6? If someone went to all that trouble to rip somebody off, I guess they deserve to get paid the extra $

It's not that hard to swap an Engine..I saw a LT1 Corvette that had a Caprice Iron Head LT1 in it..it pays to know what to look for. :judge:

Is it an FRC? There is no 2002 FRC vettes EXCEPT the Z06's so it CAN NOT be a fake if it is an FRC......

It probably had GM warranty work at some point and they swapped heads. Now some GM tech got a set of LS6 heads in his Camaro
