918 valvesprings prone to breaking??
i heard that for a while 918s were breaking a lot. im looking on our sponsors pages and i see an older design with a blue stripe and a new design called beehive. what is the difference and which were having so many problems breaking? i will be running a tr 224/224 .563/.563 114 and stage 1 ls6 heads and id like to get a set of 918s and titanium retainers. i just dont know which ones to get.

it seems alot of guys on here have had problems with the CC918 springs ,but there are alot of guys on here who never had a problem with them. i'm in the process of doing the same thing you are with a tsp 224 cam XE and i am a little leary on using the cc918's as well. i don't know which brand of stage 1 heads you have , but the guys at livernios told me that thier .580 lift springs on thier stage 1 head would support my 224 cam without a problem since the lift is .566/.566 .
as for beehives......PAC-1518 from PAC Racing would be the number you will need.

yeah actually it is livernois stage 1 ls6 heads. but im definitely upgrading springs cuz i dont wanna chance that. tsp has a 224 cam with 566 lift and a 224r cam with 581 lift. i think ive decided on the tr224/.563 cam package from thunder racing: cam, 918s, titanium retainers, and pushrods for $729. its hard to beat that. by the way, wut is PAC?

The Comp 918's are proven springs, hundreds of folks on this and other boards have had them for years (myself included). However there were a few bad batches very recently (Jan 2007 or so) as Comp changed suppliers and must have had some QC issues. I've seen about 10 people with failed 918s in the past few months. If you look around you'll see Comp is standing behind their product and trying to get to the bottom of what happened. I'm not trying to pimp out comp springs, I don't care what you use, just trying to set the record straight.

Now that they are out of mexico.... who knows?? Switching spring suppliers is a pretty big deal. There are only a handful of companies in the world that can coil valve springs. Making a quality spring is way more difficult than you think. Just because they have a proven design, doesn't mean they can manufacture that spring to meet that design. Which is what is happening to the 918.

I have a 3 year old set that are still up to specs. when Pac built them, I ran them on .612 lift with no issues or worry.

I'm hoping all my current 918 titanium retainers and etc. will carry over to the new PAC units?

I have the 1518's on my heads, I wish I could comment on how they run but my valve guides with only 3000 miles on them are SHOT. I can tell a few differences compared to the 918's I purchased in december 06 though. None of my 918's were broken but I had to pry the retainer off one of the springs, that seemed kind of wierd to me. I wonder if it was getting ready to break on me?
